In this season of Thanksgiving, it’s easy to focus more on the “giving” rather than the “thanks.” Now is a good time to reflect on the things you’ve received in your life, whether material or spiritual. When you take the time to be thankful for what you have, what you have becomes worth so much more.

Wisdom is a great virtue to strive toward. And let’s be honest, most people would probably like to have more wisdom in their lives. Socrates was considered to be one of the wisest men alive, and yet he didn’t consider himself all that wise. He always believed there was more to learn and more to know.

Wherever you are right now, know this: Wisdom truly does begin in wonder. There’s two types of wonder that applies to this. The first being the type of wonder when you’re in awe of something. It could be that moment of feeling shivers down your spine when you discover a passion.

The second type of wonder can be of inquiry. Thinking to yourself, “I wonder how that works?” or “I wonder if I can learn more.” Keep on wondering, because when you have questions, it will lead you to answers.

Eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder are lethal. On its own, anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental disorder—meaning more Americans will die as a result of suffering from anorexia than depression or bipolar disorder.

Why are these disorder so deadly? Part of the reason is that they are so common. An estimated 30 million Americans suffer from an eating disorder, and despite the stigma attached to the disorder, anorexia is not the most common of those. In fact, it is believed that binge eating disorder is the most common.

Despite the high number of sufferers, only about a third of those men and women will ever seek treatment. This can be because they may not see their problem as a medical condition, or because they are ashamed to discuss the problem with others.

As with many mental conditions, eating disorders are misunderstood and frequently oversimplified. The truth is that treating an eating disorder requires professional assistance that may include medical care, mental health care, and dietary counseling and planning. If you or a loved one are suffering from an eating disorder, we are here to help. Visit MakanaPath.com to learn more.

Having knowledge of yourself is one of the many steps to finding happiness in your life. Sometimes it is easy to think that happiness is a specific landing, that once you arrive you can stay. But happiness is something we need to cultivate and let grow. When we have self-knowledge we can have insight on what makes us happy or unhappy. We have insight on what behaviors, circumstances, or people are in the way of our happiness. It might be challenging at times, but the fight for happiness will always be worth it.

What has helped carry you through your life? Who has helped carry you through your life? As we near the holidays, take some time to think about the times you’ve been stuck and had someone help you build a bridge to get to the other side. When you were scared that you couldn’t cross the expanse of recovery, who or what helped you to the other side?

How’s your mental wellness been? With the holidays around the corner, this answer could vary for a lot of people, considering various stressors.

One great thing to do is laugh! Taking time to laugh and have fun will go a long way in staying mentally healthy. Laughter lifts morale, keeps you in a good mood and releases stress. Find ways to laugh: comic strips, funny videos or joking with friends.

Another great thing to do is maintain supportive relationships and ask for help. Maintain good relationships with friends and family for much needed feedback, a shoulder to lean on or a different perspective. We all get tired or overwhelmed by how we feel or when things go wrong. If things are getting too much for you and you feel you can’t cope, ask for help.

When life gets busy it’s easy for us to lose ourselves in the shuffle. When burn-out comes we can feel completely derailed. If you’re starting to feel burnt out or stressed out, try some of these tips to improve your mood! Treat yourself and cook your favorite meal. Take the time to do something for yourself and tell yourself “I’m doing this for me.” Go ahead and pamper yourself, take some extra time in the bath or spend some time watching shows guilt free.

You can also take a moment to pause and set new goals for yourself. Are you feeling stuck? Maybe you can begin to plan out a new course or do something new you’ve always wanted to do. It could even help to plan your day and week out. Having a plan can help you feel less overwhelmed. Be mindful to forgive yourself if you can’t follow the plan or if you miss a few things!

Eating disorders are devastating. The first thing anyone with an ED should do is seek professional help. “In most cases, things like willpower, self-help books or blogs cannot replace the professional guidance of a therapist, dietitian and physician,” says Amanda Fialk, a licensed clinical social worker. Once you’ve found help, what next?

One tip in the recovery process is to avoid your triggers. Becoming aware of your triggers can help you be more successful with your recovery and help to avoid slips and relapses. Once you know your triggers, find positive alternative ways to cope.

Another tip is to celebrate your successes, no matter how small. Recognize that you are growing and trying your best to heal. Remember to be kind to yourself and have compassion. You will get through this.

In our fast paced culture it’s easy to ignore the value of stillness. We’re constantly bombarded by noise, from our phones, from our workplaces, and even from our own minds. Take some time to slow down and remember to be there for yourself. In stillness and silence, you might be able to hear words of love that have been blocked out.
