As the weather starts to warm up, many people notice their bodies feeling a little stiffer than usual. After months of winter routines, our muscles and joints may not have been moving as much. When activity suddenly increases in the spring, that stiffness can show up quickly.

The good news is that gentle movement, stretching, and gradually increasing activity can help your body adjust as the seasons change.

If stiffness is slowing you down this spring, our team at Reform Physical Therapy is here to help you move comfortably and get back to the activities you enjoy.

Spring yard cleanup is right around the corner across Maine.

Before you grab the rake or start hauling branches, here are a few ways to protect your body:

🧡Start slowly instead of doing everything in one day
🧡Take breaks and avoid long periods of bending
🧡Lift with your legs, not your back
🧡Watch your footing during mud season

These small habits can help prevent many of the yard work injuries we see every spring.

We break down why these injuries happen and how to avoid them in our newest blog post.

Mud Season = Slip Season

When the snow melts, you’re left with a mix of mud, loose gravel, wet leaves, and patches of lingering ice. Surfaces that looked stable all winter suddenly become slippery and uneven.

That combination can throw off your balance quickly, especially when walking on trails, driveways, parking lots, or muddy yards.

Common reasons people slip during mud season:
• Wet mud that acts like a slick layer over hard ground
• Hidden ice under melting snow
• Loose gravel that shifts under your feet
• Uneven ground revealed after the snow melts

A few simple tips can help prevent falls:
• Wear shoes with good tread
• Take shorter, slower steps on muddy ground
• Watch for hidden ice in shaded areas
• Use extra caution on trails and uneven yards

Mud season might be part of life in Maine, but injuries don’t have to be.

Slipped and feeling sore? Our team is here to help you recover and move with confidence again.
