🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️ Runners, listen up!

Your shoes are new. Your playlist is ready. 🎵👟

But is your body ready for running season?

At Formed Physical Therapy & Wellness, we see it every spring — runners pushing too hard, too fast, and ending up with preventable injuries.

This year, let’s flip the script. A quick movement screen can spot imbalances before they turn into shin splints, IT band pain, or plantar fasciitis.

Run smarter, not just harder. 💪

📅 Schedule your screen today and start your season injury-free!

It's a common thought in the world of running that lifting heavy will cause muscle bulking, which may be a concern for slower and less efficient running. This thought however has been proven to be a myth! In fact, research has actually shown that heavy resistance training IMPROVES running economy and has no effect on a runner's body mass. How you ask? Research has linked this outcome to something called the "interference effect". Interference effect states that running suppresses the cellular processes that cause muscle growth. Additionally, there are different strength training parameters set for the runner versus someone looking to bulk up, resulting in positive (not negative) outcomes for the runner. But wait, there's more! Heavy resistance training for the running athlete has also been shown to result in greater motor recruitment and firing rates, as well as increased tendon stiffness. Therefore, we plead to all of our running friends out there: ditch the high rep low weight style of training and work your way into higher weights and lower reps. Your running times will thank you!

This one often has clinicians scratching their heads. They address the shoulder, but the pain continues.

In a continuing education course a few years ago, I (John) heard a statement that stuck with me:
“If it’s the shoulder blade, it’s the neck.”

Ever since then, I typically attack shoulder blade pain by starting with the neck.

That approach has been a difference maker for a lot of clients who thought they might be stuck with this for the rest of their lives.

One of the concepts we deal with in our world is something called load management. Are people doing too much in their day, or are they not doing enough?

For someone who is overdoing it and causing injury, it is often very easy for us to dial them back for a bit as they heal. But for those who have not been exercising, it is much harder for us to dial back their activity since they are already doing the bare minimum.

What does this mean for you?

If you are already exercising frequently, keep it up. If you are not exercising, it is time to start. That way, your body is better prepared to take on the world. And if injury does happen along the way, it is not happening while you are doing the bare minimum.
