On this Mother’s Day I would like to acknowledge all of the amazing, strong women in my life and all of your lives. The true definition of being a mother is anyone who nurtures and loves into the life of another. This includes moms, adoptive and foster moms, grandmas, aunts, sisters, daughters, nieces, girlfriends and of course the moms of all the fur babies in the world!

If you are a woman who NURTURES. If you are a woman who LOVES. You are a MOM!

My heart and a special prayer for peace and comfort go out this mother’s day to anyone who has lost a mom, a child, or a nurturer and is struggling to fill that void. I have hope and faith in the day that we will celebrate the most beautiful mother’s day ever in heaven; honoring every motherly nurturer for the most beautiful creations they are. This will also be the day that every mom will finally get that day off they’ve been asking a lifetime for ;)

Please know how appreciated, loved and respected you are even though we don’t always show it. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

There is a lyric in a Jason Mraz song I absolutely love, "You don't need a vacation when there's nothing to escape from." I got a chance to experience this a short 12 minute drive from my house at Bradford Beach on Milwaukee's Lakefront this past Saturday.

It was a slightly overcast morning and 55 degrees, but not even a hint of wind in the air. I took off my shoes and socks, pushed up my joggers and began to walk. Feeling the cool sand between my toes brought a comfort to my soul and a song in my heart. "You don't need a vacation when there's nothing to escape from."

I began walking along the water's edge and let the water lap over my feet and then my ankles. Refreshing not cold. An invigorating cryotherapy sensation, but free of charge.

I met a family from Rockford, IL who was in town visiting friends and they were my people. I knew they were my people simply because they were barefoot and in the water just like I was. I learned about their lives and how they were raising their children to experience, feel and breathe in each and every moment of life. My people.

As I stood in the water the sun came out for a few brief minutes and lit up the water, the sky and my shiny head. That brief moment was more valuable than a 1,000 vacations. I made my way to the south end of the beach where I could rinse the sand off my feet in the lake and then climbed upon the rocks to look and listen before returning my socks and shoes to my feet. Blessed to be in the moment I was given; just a few short months after a near paralyzing body surfing accident in Mexico.

Going on a vacation or uprooting yourself to a new destination to live will only change your physical location. The "heart" location is where we need to travel to and reside to find true joy and peace.

“See and appreciate beauty no matter where you find yourself. LIving in paradise begins in the heart and grows from there.”

Learning something new and a new lesson is a beautiful thing. Especially when the lesson is taught to you by your own child. I’ve never realized it until last week, but I discovered I often utter the phrase “Now you know what I deal with” or “Now you know what I go through on a daily basis” and didn’t realize the very negative effect those words have.

I was talking to my oldest son who was at work and was having a “rough night” on the customer service end. After hearing his experience I remarked, “Now you know what I deal with every day”. My younger son was in the car with me listening to this conversation on speaker and he made a little waving cut motion with his hand and quietly told me to stop. I paused for a moment and then stopped. Our phone call ended after I told my older son that I hoped the rest of his night got better.

When I got home I called him back and apologized and we talked about the ways in which people are currently acting out; anxiety, uncertainty, frustration to name a few and then how to work through that with understanding and compassion. The outbursts we experience from others are typically a reflection of what is going on inside of them and not directly related to anything we’ve done. I let him know to keep your sense of humor, let it go and move on to your next interaction as a new opportunity to love and be there for someone.

I remember for years serving tables in a restaurant and encountering a lot of unhappy and rude people. The great thing about that job was each day was truly a fresh start with the new shift you were working; completely independent from what happened the day before. We can choose that fresh start each day and every new moment if we choose.

I want to thank my youngest son for his small hand gesture and the simple word stop. Our goal should not be for other people and especially our loved ones to know what it’s like to experience our tough times, but rather love, support and guide them through their own tough times and hardships. Instead of asking someone to walk a mile in your shoes, take them by the hand, lead them and even pick them up and carry them over those hot coals of life. With what you’ve already experienced, chances are your feet have built up some calluses and can weather a little bit of that heat for them.
