What Happens in a Psychiatric Intake for Women?
If you’ve never met with a psychiatric provider before, it’s completely normal to feel nervous.
Here’s what actually happens in a women-centered psychiatric intake:
First, we talk about you — not just symptoms.
We review mood, anxiety, sleep, focus, trauma history (at your pace), and how you’ve been functioning day to day.
We also look at hormones and life stage.
- Where are you in your cycle?
- Pregnant, postpartum, perimenopausal?
- Any thyroid issues, anemia, or other medical factors?
Women’s mental health is rarely “just depression.” It’s often layered.
We review:
- Past medication experiences
- Therapy history
- Family mental health history
- Substance use
- Stressors and supports
You can say no to any question.
You can take breaks.
You are in control of the pace.
At the end, we create a collaborative plan. That might include therapy, lifestyle shifts, lab work, medication, hormone evaluation, or a combination.
The goal isn’t to label you.
The goal is to understand the full picture.
Women deserve mental health care that considers hormones, trauma, relationships, and identity — not just a checklist.
If you’ve been putting off an appointment because you weren’t sure what to expect, this is your reassurance. 💛
