We caught up with Josh to get his story and here is what he said.
Q: How did you end up taking over such a legacy from your father Don Hansen and why Encinitas?
A: โIt was a long transition after I graduated from college and came back to work in the family business. My dad built something really special, and I knew stepping into that legacy meant earning it. I worked in all the different departments early on โ sales floor, inventory, operations โ learning every part of the business from the ground up. Eventually, I became floor manager, and during that time we began investing heavily in our website and digital marketing, which helped modernize the business and expand our reach.
Over the past 10 years, Iโve been leading the company, but itโs still very much a true family business. My two siblings are involved, and our parents are still engaged in different capacities. Itโs something we all care deeply about. Beyond our immediate family, we also have an incredibly long-tenured staff that does an amazing job. They really are like family. Around here, we joke that when youโve worked at Hansenโs for 15 years, youโre just getting started. ๐
As for the town โ thereโs nowhere like it. Itโs the kind of place where community still matters. Generations of families shop with us, and weโve grown alongside them. Thereโs a deep surf culture here, but also a small-town feel that makes it special.โ
Q: Favorite surf break in town?
A: โIt has to be Swamiโs. Itโs just such a fun wave. On small- to medium-sized days, itโs playful and approachable, and when the big swells roll in, it can be world-class. Itโs one of those spots that really represents what surfing here is all about โ consistent, beautiful, and surrounded by an incredible community.โ โค๏ธ
