Post-Holiday Depression: Some studies show as many as 25 percent of Americans suffer from low-grade to full-blown depression after the holidays. The constant activity, excitement and expectation sustain many during the Holidays. But then expectations meet reality. Relatives are frequently stressful, the loss of loved ones is intensified, and the hope of “peace and good will” is often shattered. It’s hard for even the most resilient not to feel a letdown. Add in the frequent bad weather that may limit activities and social contact and for those who are prone to depression or anxiety, the weeks after a holiday can feel especially difficult. Here’s a few recommendations on coping during this time:
1) If you are taking medications don’t stop them over the holidays thinking you don’t need them. Stay consistent and recognize that if you have stopped you may be experiencing a chemical reaction or withdrawal.
2) If you’re in therapy DON’T CANCEL YOUR APPOINTMENTS! Make your mental health the priority.
3) Create new memories and connections. Don’t isolate in your home. Get out and do things. Move your body and stimulate your mind with unique experiences.
4) Call friends. Reach out to others and increase social interactions. STOP LIVING ON SOCIAL MEDIA and have real human-human connections.
5) If you know someone who is struggling reach out to them. Encourage them to talk about their feelings. Help connect them with a counselor or other resources. Helping others can be a great way to move past our own anxiety and depression.

An increasing number of people have been learning about EMDR therapy. Recently an episode of Grey’s Anatomy (Oct 24th episode) highlighted the treatment, and Spice Girl Mel B. has publicly discussed her success with the therapy. In an effort to help inform people we’ve created the Enid EMDR Connection page. If you or someone you know is struggling with PTSD, trauma, fears or anxiety check out the site and call us at The Byrne Center. Sean is a Level 1&2 trained EMDR Clinician.
