Hearing recap:
- Lawyers for the state of California made their argument for an injunction to ensure Providence St. Joseph Hospital follows state law on emergency medical services. (Background: https://lostcoastoutpost.com/2025/oct/10/attorney-generals-office-files-new-motion-prelimin/)
- Lawyers for Providence argued against the injunction and disputed parts of the state's case relating to Anna Nusslock and Jane Roe's treatment at St. Joe's and Mad River.
- Stay tuned to local media for more details on today's arguments. There were some really interesting (and difficult to hear) moments. Thanks to Lost Coast Outpost, NCJ/Redheaded Blackbelt, KRCR and the Times Standard for attending today and continuing to keep the community informed.
-Judge Canning has up to 90 days to decide about the injunction and indicated he will probably use most of that time.
- In the meantime, the parties agreed, and the judge ordered, that the earlier stipulation will remain in effect. Here is what that agreement means: https://lostcoastoutpost.com/2024/oct/30/judge-signs-order-committing-st-joseph-hospital-pr/
- There was also some clarification on the situation at Mad River Hospital now that its labor & delivery unit has closed. As lawyers for the state said today in court, there are two obstetricians at Mad River who are capable of providing emergency pregnancy terminations — Dr. Micks and Dr. Hackett — but they are not on call, meaning those services aren't available at Mad River 24/7, only when one of those two doctors happen to be at the hospital. That's why St. Joe's is the county's only option for true 24/7 emergency obstetric services, making its abortion policy all the more significant, the state said.
More soon! Thanks to everyone who showed up and tuned in today. — Ellie.
