Snap the Stigma
Snap the Stigma is an engagement project developed for the entire North Dakota State University campus community to de-stigmatize and humanize issues related to mental illness. As a campus community one of our greatest challenges is meeting the needs of students who are challenged by mental illness. Statistically, one in four adults from 18 to 24 years old are identified as having some form of mental illness.
Snap the Stigma began as an innovative research initiative organized by two NDSU Professors of Pharmacy Practice: Dr. Amy Werremeyer and Dr. Elizabeth Skoy. In their initial project, Skoy and Werremeyer used Photovoice as a means to capture the experience of college students living with mental illness at North Dakota State University. Photovoice is an established research method where participants photograph their everyday realities and experiences and use photography along with personal reflections to communicate their experiences with others.
Students are able to participate in Snap the Stigma by submitting their own stories and images about how theyāve dealt with mental illness. This helps humanize the issue of mental health and shows that others are not alone in their fight.
