"My six month old had a tongue, lip and buccal tie and was showing signs of mouth breathing so my pediatrician recommended we see Magda for CST. We went twice a week for around three months (CST and OT with Katie), and the progress we made was incredible! I was told by two pediatric dentists that my baby would need a tongue tie release, which we don't need to do now! Every visit was calming and enjoyable, and Magda and Katie were amazing. I plan to take all of my future kids here and will be recommending to all new moms! Thank you Magda and Katie

Every child develops at their own pace, but there are specific speech and language milestones that serve as a general guide for whatโ€™s typical at various ages. If your child is falling behind in meeting these developmental milestones, it may be a sign of a speech or language delay.

Sensory activities don't have to be complicated or involve a lot of prep. Doing chores around the house with your kiddos is perfect for adding some sensory input! ๐Ÿงน

Take laundry, for example.
๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ Pushing or pulling a laundry basket is considered heavy work for a kiddo and can help regularte the nervous system.
๐Ÿงฆ Folding socks together is great for challeging and building fine motor skills.
๐Ÿฅป And touching and sorting different items of clothing, bedding, and towels of all different textures and fabrics is great for tactile input.

Are mealtime meltdowns becoming a regular occurrence? Our pediatric feeding specialists are here to help children overcome common feeding quirks.

Does your child have particular rituals or preferences when it comes to how their food is prepared or presented, such as insisting on having their sandwich cut in triangles rather than squares?

Do they have strong preferences for the temperature of their food, refusing to eat if it's not to their liking?

Or perhaps they avoid eating foods that touch on the plate?

While these behaviors can be typical, if they're hindering your child's ability to enjoy a nutritious diet peacefully, occupational therapy can offer support and guidance.

When introducing a new food, always pair it with a "safe" food that you know your child will eat. This reduces pressure and ensures they get enough to eat. For example, if you pack a few roasted chickpeas (the new food), also include a generous portion of their favorite crackers (the safe food). The goal is for the child to simply have the opportunity to interact with the new food, even if it's just looking at it or touching it.

A phonological disorder isn't a problem with physically making a sound, but rather a problem with the rules of speech in the child's mind. The child's brain has developed a simplified system for using sounds, which leads to predictable error patterns. The key difference here is the pattern. A child with an articulation disorder might struggle with just the /s/ sound, but a child with a phonological disorder might replace all sounds made in the back of the mouth with front sounds, or always leave off the last sound of a word. These patterns make their speech very hard for unfamiliar listeners to understand.

Our speech language pathologists (SLP) help a child's brain "unlearn" these simplified rules and replace them with the correct adult sound system. It's about retraining the brain's internal map of sounds, not just the mouth's movements.

Sit down with your child and make a list of all the foods they currently enjoy and will reliably eat. This list becomes your go-to school lunch ideas for picky eaters. The list can include everything from chicken nuggets (packed in a thermos!) to crackers and cheese. Use this list to plan the week's lunches together. This simple step eliminates morning meltdowns and gives your child a predictable, safe meal to look forward to.

Don't wait until the first day of school to introduce a new lunchbox. Let your child practice opening and closing it. Have a "mock lunch" at home where they eat their usual favorite foods out of their school lunchbox. This familiarizes them with the container and reduces the anxiety of a new routine. A bento box with separate compartments is an OT favorite because it keeps foods from touching, which can be a huge barrier for many children with sensory sensitivities.
