Stroke survivors don’t just rebuild their bodies,
they rebuild their lives.

On Wednesday I had the chance to attend Henry Ford’s Stroke Survivorship program and meet Duncan “D-Bo / Sniper” Robinson.

We started talking basketball, and I told him one of my first thoughts after waking up from my 14-hour brain surgery was figuring out how I was going to become the best wheelchair basketball player I could be with this new life.

He asked if I still hoop.
I told him I’m not nearly as rusty as I thought.

We also laughed about how it’s probably a good thing my left side was affected… because I never really had a left in basketball anyway.

What stood out most was how genuine and down to earth he and his fiancée Caroline are. They even took the initiative to come spend time with the group on their own, simply to connect with and encourage stroke survivors, while also raising awareness for the stroke survivor community and mental health beyond their own work.

Grateful to the Henry Ford Stroke Team for the invitation and for continuing to create spaces that bring survivors together.

This is how we eLeVate lives. 💪

This is what recovery SHOULD look like.

After traveling to Florida, helping plan her beautiful mom’s 90th birthday, completing Lindsay’s “homework” assignment to handwrite a postcard from vacation, and making it back just in time for her handsome son’s baby shower & diaper party bash…

D’Arcy showed up to her eLeVate Recovery session ready to roll.

She even initiated planning today’s session, made about a million furry friends (no… not her recreational therapist, Lindsay 😜), and enjoyed a classic Shirley Temple.

Lindsay always says D’Arcy is happy, but she has never seen her smile and laugh this much in one session. Her jaw might actually be sore today!

Progress. Confidence. Quality of life.

We see you, D’Arcy.
Continuing to eLeVate your life, one session at a time. 💪🐾

This is exactly why eLeVate Recovery exists.

What is Recreation Therapy?

It is evidence-based treatment that improves physical strength, cognitive skills, emotional health, and quality of life through meaningful activities.

Not busy work.
Not just exercise.

Purposeful movement that translates into real-world independence.

Stroke recovery is not only about regaining function.
It is about reclaiming life.

This past month, we’ve had the honor of working closely with D’Arcy—a highly intelligent, medically retired audiologist following a stroke.

Recreational Therapy sessions have intentionally focused on challenging the brain through both familiar/unfamiliar environments and real-life tasks to promote independence, safety, and confidence beyond the clinic.

🛒 Community outings
• Incorporating use of her affected hand while walking and pushing a grocery cart
• Visual scanning of shelves and surroundings for safety and decision-making
• Navigating unfamiliar spaces with increased awareness and reduced reliance

🥤 Smoothie-making (and yes—she makes a mean one)
• Sequencing, problem-solving, and task initiation
• Functional use of her affected hand
• Carryover of skills into daily routines at home

🧘‍♀️ Yoga & movement
• Balance, body awareness, and midline orientation
• Following multi-step directions and adapting to new routines
• Cognitive flexibility and attention

🐾 Time with Ozzy & Dublin
• Motivation and engagement through meaningful connection
• Attention, awareness, and relaxation during less-structured moments
• Reinforcing responsibility, routine, and purposeful movement

🏡 Daily structure at home
• Prioritizing routine to support follow-through and consistency
• Strengthening executive functioning through intentional practice

Unfamiliar tasks spark the brain.
Real-world practice builds new neural pathways.
This is Recreational Therapy—where life skills meet confidence and quality of life. 💙

Progress does not happen by accident.
It happens with intention.

At eLeVate Recovery, we use recreation therapy to rebuild strength, confidence, and joy after stroke.

Not just exercises.
Real-life skills. Real-life wins. Real-life independence.

Spots are limited.

The ice was cold. The pressure was heavy. The stage was the world.

Huge congratulations to the USA Women’s and Men’s Olympic Hockey Teams for representing our country with heart, grit, and relentless teamwork. You showed us what resilience looks like in real time.

And to every single Olympic medalist across every sport, gold, silver, bronze, and every athlete who competed with courage, we celebrate you. 🏅

At eLeVate Recovery, we see the Olympic spirit every day.

We see it in a client standing for the first time after a stroke.
We see it in the determination to try again after a fall.
We see it in the joy that comes from movement, connection, and recreation.

Olympians train for years to compete. Our clients train for something just as powerful, independence, confidence, and quality of life.

Recreation therapy is more than exercise.
It is teamwork.
It is rebuilding identity.
It is discovering that strength still lives inside you.

Today we celebrate champions on the world stage and champions in our therapy sessions.

More joy. More movement. More life.

That is gold medal living. 🥇

Holly VanHoose, CTRS wrote what we do as clinicians so beautifully. In honor of recreational therapy month & as eLeVate continues to grow and flourish, I wanted to reshare her words. I cannot express it enough all of the support & love we are receiving. Thank you so much from the bottom of mine & Ikon’s heart(s).

“As recreational therapists, we have the privilege of facilitating growth in the lives of those we serve.

Sometimes, our role is to plant seeds of possibility - to expand awareness of opportunities and reveal new pathways toward meaningful goals.

Other times, we are called to nurture roots that have long lain dormant - to gently support passions and potential that still exist beneath the surface, waiting to be rediscovered.

And with intentional care, something begins to change.

Confidence strengthens.
Hope rises.
Purpose takes shape.

Over time, we witness people blossom - not into someone new, but into who they have always been capable of becoming.

That is the transformative power of recreational therapy.”
