Let’s talk about W-sitting 👇
You’ve probably seen it—knees bent, feet out to the sides in a “W” shape. It’s super common, especially in little ones!
✨ Why do kids W-sit?
It gives them a wide base of support, making it easier to play without worrying about balance. Kids with lower core strength or increased flexibility often prefer this position.
⚠️ What are the concerns?
When W-sitting becomes a go-to position, it can:
• Limit core strength development
• Reduce trunk rotation (important for play + coordination!)
• Place extra stress on hips, knees, and ankles
💡 Tips to help prevent it:
• Gently cue “feet forward” or “criss-cross applesauce”
• Encourage side sitting, long sitting, or kneeling
• Set up play surfaces (like small stools or cushions) to promote better positioning
• Stay consistent—little reminders go a long way!
🤍 The goal isn’t perfection—it’s variety!
If your child W-sits often or has a hard time correcting it, a pediatric PT evaluation can help address the why behind it and support stronger, more efficient movement.
