"Micayla did more than coordinate care, she safeguarded this patient's dignity in their most vulnerable moments."
Congratulations to Micayla Polson, social worker at Franciscan Health Mooresville, on being our latest Lily Award winner. The Lily Award recognizes a non-RN coworker who went above and beyond to make an impact by assisting a patient, family member or coworker.
Micayla was nominated by a coworker. A portion of the nomination follows:
“Micayla worked with a patient who was dying in the hospital and had no family support. Recognizing profound importance of presence during a patient’s final moments, Micayla went above and beyond her role to ensure this patient would not die alone.
"On the first day, she brought her laptop into the patient’s room and completed as much of her work as possible at the bedside. In the days that followed, Micayla proactively contacted multiple local hospice agencies and collaborated closely with Franciscan Alliance teams to coordinate volunteers who could rotate sitting with the patient. Due to Micayla’s extraordinary efforts, this patient did not die alone. Her actions exemplified the highest level of compassion, dignity and patient-centered care. Micayla demonstrated exceptional humanity and went far beyond expectation of her role in a way that truly embodied the mission and values of Franciscan Alliance.
"In a time defined by isolation, Micayla chose presence. In a circumstance marked by absence, she created community. Her actions serve as a powerful reminder that healthcare is not only about treatment plans and protocols, but about honing the sacredness of every life until its final breath.”
