Here are 10 practical things that can help people cope with anxiety and depression during the holidays:

1. Set Realistic Expectations

The holidays often come with pressure to be cheerful or have “perfect” gatherings. Remind yourself that it’s okay if things aren’t flawless. Focus on meaningful moments rather than perfection.

2. Create and Stick to a Budget

Financial strain can worsen anxiety and depression. Set a spending limit for gifts, travel, or events, and explore low-cost but meaningful options like handmade gifts, letters, or shared experiences.

3. Prioritize Rest

Holiday schedules can be overwhelming. Protect your sleep and downtime. A consistent sleep routine helps regulate mood and energy.

4. Say No Without Guilt

You don’t have to attend every event or meet every request. Practice saying no kindly but firmly, and honor your own needs.

5. Maintain Healthy Habits

Try to balance holiday treats with nourishing meals, stay hydrated, and move your body (walking, dancing, stretching). Small choices can support your emotional well-being.

6. Limit Alcohol and Caffeine

Both can heighten anxiety, disrupt sleep, and trigger mood swings. Enjoy in moderation or replace with calming teas, sparkling water, or festive non-alcoholic options.

7. Stay Connected (But Choose Wisely)

Isolation can worsen depression, but toxic or draining company can too. Spend time with supportive people, even if virtually, and reach out for connection when you feel lonely.

8. Build in Quiet Time

Schedule short breaks during the day to recharge—read, journal, breathe deeply, or simply sit in silence. These moments can ground you in the middle of holiday chaos.

9. Practice Gratitude and Mindfulness

Focusing on small positives (warm blanket, laughter, a kind message) can shift your mindset. Simple practices like mindful breathing or gratitude journaling ease stress.

10. Seek Professional Support

If anxiety or depression feels overwhelming, reach out to a counselor, therapist, or support group. Crisis hotlines and text lines are available if you need immediate help.

As of August 1, 2025, my heart is overflowing with gratitude—I've officially reached one year in private practice as a licensed therapist, serving some of the most incredible clients I’ve ever met. Many found me through Psychology Today, stepping into counseling for the very first time. Their courage to trust me with their healing journeys is humbling, and I don’t take it lightly.

In that time, I’ve been blessed to create a suite of therapeutic tools: an adult journal, a teen journal, a children’s mental health activity book, and a line of empowering apparel that speaks to every generation. Today, the journals arrived—and seeing them in hand is surreal. I’m so proud of this work, and I truly hope it resonates with everyone who uses it.

God’s grace has undeniably guided every step of this path, and I’m forever thankful for the opportunity to serve through the gifts He’s given me.

Up next? Expanding the apparel line, designing a journal specifically for men, and stepping into public speaking to help normalize and elevate mental health conversations.
