Apparently I didn’t find stating sources important in past years. 🫠 Studies now show varying percentages of how may individuals with type 2 diabetes don’t feel typical heart attack symptoms due to nerve damage caused by uncontrolled blood sugar. (Think neuropathy of the feet but in the heart.) Below is a simple explanation of diabetes and silent heart attacks.

It was Halloween night and I was in a local sushi restaurant celebrating my anniversary with my then husband when the text from my dad came through.

It read “Keep me in your prayers. I am not feeling well.”

You need to know, my dad, a very religious man, did not make a habit of asking his daughter (who got married on Halloween) to pray for him. EVER. To say I was concerned about him is an understatement. But, it was also my dad and knowing him, talking him into going to the hospital was going to be a waste of time.

The next morning I received a phone call from my mom that he had a massive heart attack and was too weak to have open heart surgery. He did eventually recover enough to have surgery.

Long story short, he spent the next five years in heart failure. He was most definitely not living his best life. But he was grateful for the extra time.

What does that story have to do with diabetes awareness and prevention? Everything.

He went undiagnosed with type 2 diabetes for years. (He was likely diabetic in his 30’s.) And then in denial for many years after. By the time he start taking it seriously, he had lost most of his vision and the cascade of diabetes complications were growing.

Metabolic dysfunction and type 2 diabetes start years before the heart disease. The uncontrolled blood sugar causes inflammation and damages the blood vessels in the body. Heart, eyes, all of it.

The heart breaking (pun kinda intended) fact is that type 2 diabetes is preventable. Its damage can be managed if diagnosed early enough.

Type 2 diabetes is considered a lifestyle disease. Prevention involves getting in exercise every day, being mindful of food choices and establishing a healthy relationship with stress.

I have spent every day since I was 35 doing my best to prevent or at least delay development of type 2 diabetes. And I have been successful too. Preventing diabetes is my passion. I want to live well and joyously inhabit my body. I want that for you too. Diabetes does not have to be your destiny.

Friday’s nourishing practice- A stroll to the post office to touch base with some clients (1) I haven’t heard from in a while and (2) think they would want to be aware of some new services and classes being offered.

It was a sweet surprise to run across the high school parade.

The last one of the year. Date is Sunday, October 12th from 10am-2pm. All supplies and snacks provided. Investment into your future self…$100.00

I am looking forward to this one as it will set the tone for what happens in my business, with my health and social connections.

I have thoroughly enjoyed facilitating these and watching participants grow and change. But, I am also feeling this is the end of a cycle. I cannot guarantee there will be a continuation of these in 2026. So if you want in, make sure to let me know since there is only room for 8 participants.

This morning was the first Zoom call for the 90 Day Fasting Group I am facilitating. (And no, we are not fasting fo 90 days straight. 😉)

It was so good.

It’s a small group so the participants get a large amount of Q&A time.

Today we:
🗣️Set realistic goals.
🗣️Shared big take-aways and “aha” moments from this week’s reading.
🗣️Discussed using calories and macro data as a tool to learn what our bodies need. Not as a way to starve ourselves or contribute to diet culture.

So excited to see the wins for these ladies in the upcoming weeks.

I am going to be honest, intermittent fasting is free. You do not need me to incorporate it into your life. BUT, if you want some assistance surfing the lessons and questions that come with intermittent fasting, blood sugar control and gut health, I am here for you.

This group kicks off September 2nd. We will be working our way through the Fast Like a Girl book. So go ahead and order that if you plan on participating.

Also, we meet for 30 minutes every Saturday morning on Zoom at 8:30 for Q&A as well as goal setting strategy.
