Let's talk about negative pressure anti-choking devices! In my classes, the most asked question is "What about those things that you can use when someone is choking?"
The most effective way to give assistance to someone who is choking are back blows and abdominal thrusts. The good news is, this approach is completely free and not reliant on finding and using a device! The Red Cross acknowledges some instances where the devices would be beneficial - like on those who are bed-bound or wheelchair bound, or on small children/infants where the caregiver might be hesitant to deliver the appropriate force required for an effective back blow/chest thrust, or when back blows and abdominal thrusts have been ineffective on a responsive person.
As always, science is constantly changing. We are always learning and growing and developing new strategies to all aspects of life. If choking is a concern of yours, please reach out so I can show you and your loved ones how to care for a choking infant, child, and adult.
