Do you like to walk? Do you count your steps? It’s been going around that 10,000 steps a day is the healthy way!

Most people on average will walk 5-7 thousands steps a day, even with a moderate sedentary lifestyle. As no number has been defined as the healthy number of steps. It can’t hurt to aim for a goal, the biggest thing is to just move. Getting out there and moving helps with all sorts of things. Plus it’s fun to be out in nature, fresh air and some beautiful scenery no matter where you are in nature.

Did you know that almonds have a lot of salicylic acid which helps as an anti-inflammatory agent and also helps with headaches or minor pain…just like an aspirin! 😱

These nuts are full of protein and minerals that help the overall health of the body. They are a great snack while hiking or camping or just at the office.

Taiwan issued a survival book to its citizens in case of a war for the first time. With the world 🌎 in the state it’s in right now this got me thinking, how many of you keep a survival book in your gear or bug out gear?

I actually keep an army survival manual in my gear. Not only as a reference but also something to keep my mind occupied if I do become stranded.

What are your thoughts on keeping a survival book with your gear? Also, any thoughts about a government issuing them to its citizens?

Grizzly attack!

I read a news article today about a father of 4 who is believed to have been killed by a grizzly in Yellowstone. I do not know any specifics besides what’s been reported, with that being said below are some tips on bear attacks.

Before a bear attack, if you are able to notice it, remain calm and stick close to the people in your group if there are any. Try to figure out if the bear is a grizzly or a black bear as they behave differently.

For a black bear stand tall and look it in the eyes, allow it a path to escape and yell at the bear to "Get out of here!" More often then not the bear will just leave as it doesn't want to fight any more than you do right now. NEVER do this with a grizzly bear! If a black bear attacks you need to fight back. Black bears only attack to kill so if you "play" dead then soon you will be dead.

Now to the difference with the grizzly bear. This bear is one of the most powerful around. If the bear stands up it isn't a sign of attack but rather may be sniffing the air or looking at you from a different angle. Be calm, do not look this bear in the eye and if possible slowly back away. If the bear attack and makes physical contact, fall to the ground and play dead: on your stomach, face down, legs spread and arms out to avoid the bear flipping you over. If you have a backpack on then leave it on and let the bear take its furry out on the backpack. When the bear is done with the attack, stay calm and don't move until you are sure the bear is gone, even if you have to wait a while. If the attack is prolonged or the bear begins to eat you, this is no longer a "play" dead situation and you need to fight back. Use whatever you can and hit the bear in vital spots preferably on the head and neck area.

There is a lot of information on how to fight a bear and we will discuss this in a future post. Remember when in bear country be alert, always try to avoid bears and if possible carry a can of bear pepper spray as a deterrent. Stay safe.

Moss is an amazing find in the wilderness!

In the Northern hemisphere, Moss will generally grow on the Northside of trees and rocks because the sun is more to the south, this works in reverse in the southern hemisphere as well: moss grows facing the south. Also, pay attention to the amount of moss in the area, some moss may grow in some sunlight but the majority will not so look for the majority of growth.

Moss also tells you that the area has moisture, either it rains a lot or there is a lake or river nearby. Moss absorbs moisture from the air. In survival it is always good to know what direction you are moving, we don't always have a compass so let nature help guide you.

AHA teaches to compress at a rate between 100-120 and push approximately 2 inches into the body. This study further proves the science of this as if this is maintained, survivability increases. The study actually mentioned a compression rate of 107 and a depth of 4.7 cm = 1.8 inches and if the rescuer was within 20% of this the survivability was increased. Always exciting when more conclusive evidence can be given to why we do what we do.

Outside isn’t just for the paws!

Being outside, feeling the breeze or the warmth of the sun have been the source of debate and study in the medical community for a while.

The evidence for the link between nature and health has been growing. The nature prescription, as it’s been called, is an order to get outside. Being in nature has been proven to reduce stress, anxiety and plenty of other issues.

Did you know pine needles contain 3-5 times the vitamin C as an orange!

Pine needle tea in survival is very beneficial but you don’t need to be in a survival situation to enjoy the tea and its benefits.

Boil water, chop up the pine needles and place the water over the needles and let steep for about 10 minutes.

Do you know how to stop bleeding?

Of course seeing a lot of blood can be challenging but action is needed.

* Use direct pressure to stop bleeding. Sometimes this has to be done for upwards of 10-15 minutes.
* You can elevate the injured area above the level of the heart to help slow bleeding.
* A tourniquet should be used as a last resort but is of great use when needed.

When thinking outside the box, one doesn’t need the supplies on the left. Everyone wears bandages and tourniquets everyday.

This is the first kit we made for teaching controlling bleeding. We like to utilize visuals and hands on teaching. Let me know if you’d like to host a class.

As the weather begins to warm and everyone gets ready for the trails and the fun. Not only do we need to be aware of safety from what we may run into, we also should keep in mind, “The Seven Leave No Trace Principles”. (The last picture will show them)

* Plan Ahead and Prepare
* Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
* Dispose of Waste Properly
* Leave What You Find
* Minimize Campfire Impacts
* Respect Wildlife
* Be Considerate of Other Visitors
