In the following paragraphs, you will read the philosophy of patient care I developed as a nurse. This philosophy set me on the course to become an Osteopathic Physician. As I continue to grow and develop in my profession, I know this philosophy will continue to embody everything I do. From the start of my nursing career, I knew that nursing was far more than just a job....

What does it mean to be happy? Why does happiness always seem fleeting? What brings happiness? What disturbs happiness? Our society teaches us that more stuff, the perfect relationship, or even the right job can bring us happiness. Although all these things may bring momentary happiness, it generally doesn’t last. Our happiness is often challenged when we enter a confrontation with a loved one or the job with thought was ideal becomes overwhelming....

Did you know smoking harms almost every organ system? When you smoke, the toxins from cigarette smoke enter the bloodstream through your lungs and can cause damage anywhere in the body. That’s why smoking causes cancer in so many different places including the blood, cervix, colon, esophagus, stomach and bladder. Smoking ci******es also weakens the body’s immune system, making it harder to kill cancer cells.

If no one smoked, 1 in 3 cancer deaths in the United States could be prevented.

Oh hi there! It has been some time since I posted last. I guess it is time for a me to give you a life update and fill you in on my journey to becoming a physician. I think you last heard from me Fall of 2019 🤦🏽‍♀️! For those of you that don't know, I got into several Osteopathic Medical Schools, but I finally chose to accept Nova South Eastern University's offer....

I did a thing this morning... yeah I worked out as the sun was coming up! Best feeling EVER! This is day 3 of my 21 day program! I love how it mixes weight lifting with cardio. Probably the best fitness program I've tried to date! The weightlifting days are high reps so don't think I used the 10 lbs. Those are there for future motivation. Form is more important than how heavy your weights are.

The muscle roller is also a life saver. Gonna start using it everyday on the big muscles. When you are working out frequently you need to release the tension in the muscles to improve recovery. I have always had poor recovery with soreness lasting for days. I am learning to listen to my body when it comes to intensity and working on improving my post workout nutrition.

In what areas do you struggle in regards to fitness and nutrition?

Heal thyself first!

We were reminded of this principle on the 2nd day of orientation. As physicians and healthcare providers, we are very good at taking care of everyone else and neglecting our own wellness!

That touches on another point I wanted to mention. What is Wellness?

Let me know what your thoughts are below👇🏼.

I will do a follow up post and share my thoughts.

Challenge accepted! Thanks for nominating me.

3 days of med school down and 4 years to go. These last few days have been all about setting intentions and figuring out what is going to work for me. I know that I'll be fine tuning all along the way but so glad for the mentors I have. To all you med students! We've got this!

Today, I start medical school! I am so excited for what this new chapter will bring. I was gifted with this promise today from Jeremiah. Not only was I assured of God's desire to bless me but I was reminded that even when the heat gets turned up and the way gets difficult I have nothing to fear or be anxious over. He will provide for me in abundance.

I would love to hear what your favorite quote or bible promise is! Feel free to share it with me in the comments! @ NSU Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine

My last day as a nurse was spent on the COVID unit. I floated their several times the past few months. Some nurses have been assigned to the unit and have worked there for 5 months without additional compensation. They have had to live with the fear of bringing it home to their loved ones everyday. The mental and physical exhaustion is real. On the COVID unit, we try to delicately balance being present with our patients and limiting exposure. That means we get to work under staffed on many occasions! If you thought taking care of 6 patients under normal conditions was hard, try taking care of 6 patients on isolation that may or may not have COVID. It takes an additional 5 minutes to don and doff PPE making sure you use proper hygiene throughout! In the last few months, this has become the new normal for many healthcare workers.

The patients also suffer! The patients are experiencing increased depression and anxiety. They have limited access to loved ones. They are isolated. The healthcare providers are all covered up. They fear that the virus might lead to death cause all that is emphasized on the news are the death counts.

The families also struggle! How is my family member? How many times can I call a day without overwhelming the nurse? Will they make it? When should we take our family members to the hospital if they show symptoms?

Anxiety and fear seem rampant these days and reasonably so. We feel out of control and the future seems unpredictable. But what are we doing with these emotions? Are we choosing to hold on to them and make them the center of our ruminations?

STOP! It is time to stop and acknowledge our emotions but we must not allow them to rule us. Choose hope and thanksgiving; love and peace.

"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!...The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with THANKSGIVING , present your requests to God. And the PEACE of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. " Philippians 4:4-8

💪🏼Sometimes the sweat just drips off your nose and eyelashes!

That is when you know you've done a good workout. A good workout can be 10 minutes, 30 minutes or even 2 hours if that is your thing👊🏼. The important thing is that you make it a priority. No matter what stage of life you find yourself, it will always be easy to push exercise to the back burner. Unfortunately, that also affects your health not only 🏋️‍♀️physically but also 🧠mentally and 🙏🏼spiritually.

So go sweat it out today. I know you are reading this post and probably not feeling it after a long exhausting Monday!

Today I am grateful for faithful and sincere friendships.

A good friend does much to lift the spirit. In this time of social distancing, political and social upheaval, and generalized fear and uncertainty, people are experiencing more depression, anxiety, and loneliness than ever before. We are facing one of the biggest mental health crisis of our time. Spending countless hours on social media does not fill the void for human contact and interaction! Social media can actually increase anxiety, depression, loneliness, selfharm, and suicidal thoughts!

Call a friend today! Texting doesn't cut it! Let them hear your voice and/ or see your face! If you are struggling, reach out. You are not a bother. You are not alone!

What dreams do you have? What is keeping you from them? How are you working towards them?

About Me

My name is Gabriella Orta. I have been a registered nurse for four years and currently aspire to become a doctor of osteopathic medicine. As a nurse and a future physician, this picture reflects my love for healing. As soon as I saw this mural during my visit to Israel, I knew that I had to take a picture with it. Yes, as a healthcare provider, I use band-aids but I hope my work goes deeper than band-aids. I hope my words and smiles bring healing to my patients and that the education and care I give encourages them to make the changes in their life that will make a difference. Thank you for stopping by my blog. I hope you can join me on my journey through life and medical school.
