Penetrating trauma remains a leading cause of preventable death in the civilian and military setting. Penetrating injury frequently results in damage to critical organs or vascular anatomy, leading to rapid onset of hemorrhagic shock and exsanguination.

Timely recognition of injuries, hemorrhage control, and rapid transport to definitive care are critical factors in outcomes for penetrating trauma patients. Prehospital clinicians need to know what makes a difference, and more importantly what doesn’t, when treating penetrating trauma in the out-of-hospital setting.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) systems and first responders have developed numerous approaches to the treatment of penetrating trauma. In this article, we will review the pathophysiology of penetrating trauma: from initial injury to the development of hemorrhagic shock, and finally traumatic cardiac arrest.

Tropic Air Rescue successfully hosted a comprehensive training program for newly appointed flight medics and nurses, culminating in a collaborative live exercise with a local emergency medical services and fire agency, featuring multiple simulated landings and patient transport drills, with sincere appreciation extended to the training staff for their exceptional organization and ex*****on of the well-attended event.

Mission Monday: First nighttime helicopter trauma transfer in Bahamas history. 🚁

A member suffered a traumatic injury in Nassau. Our crew responded immediately, transporting them from Doctor's Hospital directly to Ryder Trauma Center's rooftop heliport in Miami.
