The Group Beta Strep (GBS) test is usually performed around 36 weeks gestation. Most women are told that it is mandatory, and that their provider must administer it.

They are told to disrobe from the waist down, cover up with that crunchy paper drape, and scoot their butt to the end of the table. All this so that someone can wipe a swab on their butt and va**na, something they easily could have done themselves in the bathroom.

Most midwives will tell you that you have the option to swab yourself, most OBs will not. In fact, if you say you’d prefer to DIY it, they will often treat you as if you couldn’t possibly handle such a task.

What if you don’t do it right?! How will you *gasp* reach all the way back there?!

Please 🙄

You’re a grown woman, and I’m sure swabbing your own butt is on the looooong list of things you’re very capable of.

If you’d rather perform your own swab, just tell your provider that’s what you’ll be doing. You will simply take the swab to the bathroom, swab your stuff, and then put it back in the container for the lab to culture. Easy peasy.

This 🙏🏻 — As much as it breaks my heart to see families transfer from their planned home birth, safety will always come first — for both mother and baby. The emotional impact is real; there’s a deep sense of loss when the birth you envisioned changes course. I’m always honored to walk beside families through that grief and healing process… because I feel it, too. 💔

I try my damndest to never wait for that red flag. 3 yellow flags and we are transferring. 1 yellow perks me up, 2 yellows have me on guard, 3 yellows, we must go in. Might my transfer rate be a bit higher then others? Maybe. Some years for sure...others not so much. The key (my key) is to listen to my gut (some may call that the Holy Spirit). The end game is mom and baby being safe. Is there trauma? Yes, sometimes, but homebirth is not the be all end all. Hospitals and OBs are there for when we need them and I am grateful.

Just a little midwifery joy ✨

I saw this beautiful family today for their postpartum check-in 💛
They welcomed their third baby at home—surrounded by love, laughter, and faith. 🙏 And a fantastic playlist, including plenty of Forrest Frank. 😍🎶

And this time, I brought someone very special with me: my 10-year-old daughter.👧
She was there for the birth, helped care for the older kids, and says she wants to be a midwife when she grows up 👩‍🍼💕

The older siblings had been asking to see her again, and it was the sweetest reunion 🥹
These kids know how to love big, and it shows.

So grateful to be part of moments like this 💫
