So many people really have no idea just how important it is to educate ourselves on Lung cancer......actually any cancer. The dangers that come with the myths of lung cancer is something we often overlook. So with that in mind I decided to start a weekly series called Myth Monday in hope to educate others on Lung cancer myths and the dangers that come with them.
* The information I share is from research I've done and from educational materials I have received from the organizations I work with. I will try to share my resources with every post.*
Myth #1
Only smokers get lung cancer
The biggest and in my opinion the most dangerous myth about lung cancer is if you don't smoke you can't get lung cancer. I find this myth to be extremely dangerous because believing only smokers get lung cancer may delay a diagnosis for someone who doesn't smoke.
According to an article on very well health (health.com) some inaccuracies actually come from lung cancer awareness. They say it is awareness campaigns on the dangers of smoking that overshadow and allow us to overlook the fact that non smokers are diagnosed with lung cancer everyday. The article also states that the majority of people who are diagnosed with lung cancer are not current smokers but they are in fact either former smokers, or have never smoked in their lives. Although it is more common for former smokers to develop lung cancer, 20% of women diagnosed are life long non smokers. So unfortunately because of this myth lung cancer is often diagnosed in the later and less treatable stages due to the uneducated beliefs of lung cancer. It is also important to know that symptoms of lung cancer in non smokers may differ from symptoms of lung cancer in smokers. So please take the time to do your own research so you can educate yourself and others too. You never know.............. You just might save a life.
