Repost from Center for Maternal Mental Health
This is important. Studies show Black women are disproportionately impacted by Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety etc.) and are less likely to receive adequate treatment when needed. In these studies, even when factors such as socioeconomic status and level of education are controlled, the disparities remain. While further research is necessary to identify definitive causes, some of the factors that I have seen firsthand are:
◻️ Stigma surrounding seeking mental health treatment
◻️ Pressure to fit the stereotype of a “strong Black woman”
◻️ Implicit bias and discrimination within healthcare systems
◻️ Belief that mental health care conflicts with one’s spiritual faith
◻️ Shortage of culturally competent providers
◻️ Fear of having one’s child taken away
◻️ Difficulty establishing trust with one’s therapist
The good news is that with awareness comes empowerment to advocate. Providers, we have a duty to be mindful of these challenges and to be part of the change. Black mamas, we have the right to use our knowledge and our voices until our needs are met.
We are all in this together 🤍........
