The narrative we are seeing in the media is painting home birth in a dangerous light. The reality? Research shows that for most people home is often the safest place to birth with lower intervention rates (so less forcep, ventouse, episiotomies), lower risk of infection, haemorrhage, the list goes on!
We need to ask ourselves why home birth is always in the spotlight? Why It’s painted as dangerous or risky when the statistics show in most cases the opposite? Of course there are some heartbreaking situations where someone will have a devastating complication during their home birth but these are reported heavily whilst all the much more frequent tragedies that unfold in hospitals aren’t reported in the same way…
It is fear mongering in the most unhelpful way. We need empowering, evidence-based information so people can make individualised choices that are right for them. We do not need to try and put everyone in the same box.
