Kids sick all the time? This might be why 👇

Hi, I’m Lexie 👋🏼 — the nurse practitioner behind North Star Functional Health.

We’ve welcomed so many new faces here lately, and after just wrapping up our branding session with Little Aussie Photography, it felt like the perfect time to re-introduce myself.

I’m a Central Michigan native who relocated to Northern Michigan in 2021, and I bring nearly 20 years of experience in healthcare to the table. By day, you’ll find me working in primary care pediatrics as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Outside of that role, I run North Star Functional Health, where I have a special passion for caring for women that are navigating hormonal issues as well as children with autism and ADHD - though I truly enjoy caring for patients of all ages and stages.

My journey into functional medicine began on a very personal level. I know firsthand what it feels like to be stuck with unanswered questions, persistent symptoms, and no clear path forward—despite doing “all the right things” in conventional medicine. Functional medicine gave me the lens I had been missing: the ability to look deeper, connect the dots, and address root causes rather than simply managing symptoms. Today, my goal is to partner with patients, meet them where they are, and walk alongside them on a genuine, sustainable path toward healing.

Outside of the clinic, I’m a wife and mom to four amazing kids. We farm, homeschool, are active in our church, and spend most of our free time cheering on our kids at the hockey rink or the softball field. In the summer, you’ll find us camping and enjoying our lake property downstate.

Vitamin D is one of the most common deficiencies I see in both kids and adults.

And it’s not just about bones.

Vitamin D plays a role in:
• immune system strength
• mood and mental health
• energy levels
• muscle function
• inflammation regulation
• brain development in kids
• hormone health

Low vitamin D can show up as:
• frequent colds or infections
• autoimmune conditions
• fatigue or low motivation
• muscle aches or weakness
• low mood or anxiety
• poor focus in kids

What about “normal” levels?

Most labs say vitamin D is normal at 30 ng/mL.
In functional medicine, we often aim for 50–80 ng/mL for optimal immune and neurologic support (individualized, always).

Can you get enough naturally?

Sun exposure helps—but modern life makes this hard.
Food sources are limited and include:
• fatty fish (salmon, sardines)
• egg yolks
• cod liver oil
• fortified foods

That’s why deficiency is so common—even in people who “eat well.”
