Yesterday I was at community acupuncture at Yoga , setting up bolsters and blankets on the floor so I could comfortably rest for a half hour and ease some anxiety that’s been swirling around. Dorcus said, “It’s like you’re playing Legos.” Yes, that’s it! I did always love Legos… I had the pastel colored set of course. Putting the pieces together to bring a whole beautiful object to life was my jam. That's a lot what I am up to in teaching Restorative Yoga. Using all these props to build a whole shape to create a soft gentle, cozy space for my clients to come to life - to be comfortable enough to be still for a bit so they can welcome all their parts home into the wholeness of their heart.
People think I’m good at rest because I teach it. I am actually good at practicing it…sometimes. It doesn’t come easy for me. Sometimes my rest is actually a collapse or disassociation because no other pathway exists in that moment. Other times it brings me into the magic of the present moment, links me with spirit, connects me to my creative flow, or even co-regulates me with my community. I do this work because I know this work in my own body and I’ve been studying and practicing rest for 10 years. I teach this practice because I need it and I want to live in a world that is joyfully rested.
I'd love to teach YOU about this practice. Whether you're looking for a quick learning moment or a deep dive - I have options for you (CEs available for Yoga Alliance teachers). I have a short workshop on this Sunday at 2pm at Yogamour Yoga & Healing Arts Center to teach you how to set yourself up in a comfortable savasana. If it's hard to find that dreamy space with just a yoga mat and bunch of sweaty bodies surrounding the space you’re in, let me introduce you to the props. You might learn how to actually support that twinge in your low back, or your unhappy hip and I can help you - I have a whole bag of Legos (I mean blankets) to help you find another way.
If you're wanting to dive deeper into the study of Restorative Yoga and support your own clients - spend the whole weekend learning at OM Shala, my home studio in Middletown, MD January 30 - February 1.
