Outdoor Therapeutics

Outdoor Therapeutics Specializing in nature-informed trauma treatment scientifically proven to benefit human wellness.

Outdoor Therapeutics is dedicated to improving mental wellness through clinical and wellness programs that realign connections between mind, body, and the natural world. We do this by integrating evidence-based therapy approaches with resources in nature that are scientifically proven to benefit human wellness, such as exposure to green space for nervous system stabilization. This dedication to returning humans to the wild results in comprehensive and unique offerings such as Nature-Integrated Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), a proven effective therapy for trauma, and therapeutic backpacking trips grounded in Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy. Outdoor Therapeutics utilizes the natural world to the degree clients are comfortable, such as introducing plant care into office sessions, having a “walk and talk” session along the Monocacy River, or having an extended outdoor immersion focused on wildlife and the landscape as a source of metaphor, mirroring, and inspiration.

Outdoor Therapeutics invites you to celebrate our contributions to economic justice in 2025. Through the generosity of our staff, we were able to offer over 700+ clinical hours at a reduced rate to our community, 68 hours of which were pro bono services. We are grateful, in particular, to our talented graduate interns who made affordable mental health possible.

As we wind down the year and head into a period of hibernation, we want to thank the many community partners that made our programming possible in 2025. Thank you to Hood College, Horses Healing Humans, Friends Wilderness Center, Hawkwood Farm, Department of Social Services, Thorpewood, Pro Bono Counseling, and community agencies and providers who invest their trust in us as a referral source. We are grateful for the network and resources you provide to our clients and staff.

With Winter fast approaching, the team at Outdoor Therapeutics wants to take a moment to gather some appreciation for the cold months ahead. A necessary part of the seasonal cycle, winter often gets a bad rep due to its short days and chilly climate. However, there is still plenty of magical moments and life that surrounds us during this period. Join us in reflecting on our favorite parts of this season by sharing some of your favorite winter sounds!

As clinicians, sometimes we focus so heavily on safety planning with our clients during the holiday season that we forget the year’s end can also be about celebration. How have your clients evolved this year? What might a year-end ritual look like to mark change? What would one last assessment reveal about changes in symptoms? Sometimes the best gift we can offer is awareness that their time in therapy has yielded important and desired change.

This time of year, we invite you to be gentle with yourself. One way to be gentle is through the practice of honesty. There can be pressure during the holidays to mask and show up as a particular version of yourself. You might consider taking away some of that pressure by letting yourself have your experience as it is, instead of what you think it should be. This practice could be exactly the self-care that we need so deeply now and always.

Mushrooms remind us of resilience, transformation, and the unseen processes of healing. So much of growth happens beneath the surface in the soil, in our bodies, and in our nervous systems.

When we spend time outdoors, especially in the slower rhythm of autumn, we start to notice these patterns in ourselves. This season, let nature guide you back into balance. Take a slow walk in the woods, breathe the damp earth air, and notice the small signs of renewal all around you.

Last month’s Day Walk Weekend offered a potent container of ritual that grounded participants in presence and guided them back into deep reconnection with themselves. Rooted in the land, the experience revealed how nature provides an abundance of materials for constructing—and courageously stepping into—our deepest intentions. If you’re interested in this kind of deep immersion, join us for our Vision Fast in 2026!

Grounding emotionally in nature through divided attention helps us notice small, sensory anchors that can steady us when we feel overwhelmed. Even in moments of crisis, there is almost always some access to relative safety, however subtle. Sometimes it’s a brightly colored leaf, the sight of a dog on the sidewalk, or the gentle current of a river reminding us we’re still connected.
