We are sharing the news that our founder, Chester Tollefson, has died at the age of 103.

Chester and his wife, Gladys, founded Rise in 1971 as a place for their son, Loring, and others with disabilities to learn skills, build friendships, and take part in their communities. What began with just a few people grew over more than five decades into an organization that has touched thousands of lives.

While Rise has expanded, our mission has remained the same: to support people in living their lives on their own terms. That commitment is part of Chester’s enduring legacy.

All of us at Rise extend our sincere condolences to Chester’s family. We are deeply grateful for his vision and the strong foundation he leaves behind.

We invite you to join us in honoring and celebrating Chester’s long and full life.

On Monday, March 23, Rise team members visited the Minnesota State Capitol for MSSA (Minnesota Social Service Association) Day on the Hill. We met with Senator Jeff Howe (District 13) and Senator Mark Koran (District 28) to advocate for several important bills that impact the people we support.

We discussed HF 3555/SF 4395, which would improve HCBS management related to targeted case management, and voiced our support for HF 3181, aimed at strengthening waivered case management through labor market analysis and rate adjustments.

We also urged our senators to help protect Medicaid and oppose any proposals that would cut funding. Medicaid is essential to Rise’s programs, ensuring the people we support receive the critical services that improve their quality of life.

Thank you to our legislators for taking the time to meet with us and hear these important priorities.

We’re excited to spotlight Berekit Kohler, a Project SEARCH graduate who began her job at Urban Air Adventure Park in November 2025 with support from her Rise Employment Consultant, Nadia Kellner.

Through Project SEARCH, Berekit gained hands-on experience in areas like environmental services and kitchen food prep. She now uses those skills at Urban Air by doing various job duties like sanitizing, sweeping, wiping tables, and preparing birthday rooms before and after events.

Berekit says her favorite part of the job is being around kids. She also shared that she loves her job and is very happy to be working!

We’re so proud of you, Berekit!
