👩🏽‍⚕️ I’ve got my gorgeous patient here today, and we’re talking Botox! 💉

Botox isn’t about changing your face, it’s about softening movement in areas where fine lines like to settle.

Think forehead lines, crow’s feet, frown lines...all those little expressions we make every day.
The goal? To help you age gracefully, not frozen, just refreshed, rested, and confident ✨

Results kick in within a few days and last about 3–4 months, depending on your muscle strength and metabolism.

Science + self-care = the ultimate beauty combo 💉💋

ORAL BACTERIA CAN TRAVEL TO THE HEART đź«€

As an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, I can’t emphasize this enough: the mouth is not separate from the rest of the body. What happens in your gums doesn’t stay in your gums.

🦠 The science:
Researchers have detected bacteria commonly found in dental plaque inside arteries and even heart tissue of patients who suffered heart attacks.

👉 How does this happen?
• Gum inflammation or periodontal disease allows bacteria to slip into the bloodstream through microscopic breaks in tissue.
• Once circulating, these bacteria can trigger inflammation inside blood vessels.
• Chronic inflammation accelerates damage, contributing to cardiovascular disease.

⚠️ This doesn’t mean oral bacteria directly cause heart disease. But it does show a clear biological link between gum health and cardiovascular health.

đź’ˇ The takeaway:
Prioritizing your oral hygiene: brushing, flossing, and routine professional cleanings which protects far more than your smile. It may also help protect your heart.

ORAL BACTERIA CAN TRAVEL TO THE HEART đź«€

Scientists have discovered something shocking — bacteria commonly found in dental plaque have been detected inside the arteries and even heart tissue of patients who suffered heart attacks.

How does this happen?
When gums are inflamed or diseased, bacteria can slip into the bloodstream through tiny breaks in gum tissue. Once in circulation, they may contribute to inflammation in blood vessels, accelerating cardiovascular damage.

This doesn’t mean oral bacteria directly cause heart disease, but their presence shows how strongly the mouth and heart are connected. Ignoring gum health could silently fuel risks far beyond the mouth.

Current research suggests that keeping gums healthy through regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings isn’t just about saving teeth — it could also help protect the heart.

Meet Akayla—a rising senior at Oakwood University who discovered me through my Day in the Life of an Oral Surgeon video with and reached out to shadow. Today, she got a front-row seat to oral surgery in action!

From seeing a biopsy, to watching extractions, dental implant placements, and IV sedation, Akayla was fully immersed in the surgical side of dentistry. She shared that she really enjoyed the experience—and I loved seeing her curiosity and confidence shine throughout the day.

It’s always an honor to mentor future leaders in healthcare. Wishing Akayla all the best on her journey to becoming a dentist! 🦷💪🏽✨

Wisdom teeth, also referred to as third molars, get their name by being the last teeth to come in during young adulthood, the time of life when you gain maturity or “wisdom.” The majority of people have most of their permanent teeth by age 13. Your wisdom teeth should come into your mouth between the ages of 17-21. Sometimes they do not have enough room to come in normally or are in the wrong position to come straight up. When that happens, your oral surgeon may refer to them as impacted and they may have to be removed.

Not everyone’s teeth develop on the same schedule. That’s why it’s important to see your dentist regularly so he or she can monitor the progress of your wisdom teeth. Every patient is unique, but in general, wisdom teeth may need to be removed when there is evidence of changes in the mouth such as:

• pain
• infection
• cysts
• tumors
• damage to adjacent teeth
• gum disease
• tooth decay (if it is not possible or desirable to restore the tooth)

Dr. James may also recommend removing your wisdom teeth to prevent problems or for others reasons, such as when removal is part of getting braces, treating gums or other dental procedures.
