We want to say "thank you" to our EMS partners across North Texas who transported more than 14,000 patients to our ER in 2024. This number represents the collaboration we have with EMS, and the trust of patients and families who needed our help at critical times in their lives. To commemorate this meaningful milestone, hospital leaders stopped by Plano Fire-Rescue Station 9, who brought in the 14,000th patient on Christmas Day. Shown are Andrea Ansley, Jennifer Ledbetter, FF/Paramedic Tim Roberts, FF/Paramedic Tyler Cleveland, FF/Paramedic Bobby Ritter, Engineer/Paramedic Lance Haley, Vanessa Lozada, and Steve Hadzima, M.D.

YOU are qualified to use an AED. A shock from an automated external defibrillator greatly increases the chances of surviving a cardiac arrest, but the device is used only 10% of the time by bystanders. No training is needed to use an AED: Pictures and voice prompts tell you exactly what to do.

"You've had a massive heart attack. You're lucky to be alive."

Those words stunned Rick St. Sauveur, then 57. His job was physically active, and he played softball. Though he ate fast food while on the run, he'd never felt he was unhealthy.

But doctors had found a 100% blockage in his left anterior descending artery. They put in two stents to open it. Within a week, Rick was home from the hospital. He immediately began following a Mediterranean diet and jumped at the chance to do cardiac rehabilitation.

"I totally changed my whole mindset on health and nutrition and what's good for you and what's not," he said. After 12 weeks of rehab, he transitioned to a cardiac maintenance program, and the staff asked him to be an ambassador to newer patients.

Rick was working out one to two hours a day and walking 5 to 8 miles a day when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. He set up a home gym in his basement, but he missed the camaraderie with his fellow heart patients.

In spring 2020, Rick and his cardiac rehab buddy Cliff Karten started a support group they dubbed "The Stents," starting with five members. The Stents pulled each other through the pandemic and continue to meet every two weeks, sometimes with as many as 15 members.

Rick continues to inspire with his dedication to daily exercise and positive attitude. "People see his drive and his success," Cliff says, "and they want that for themselves."
