I hear this all the time from mom:“I think allergies are just part of childhood.” And honestly, I get it. When the runny noses, sneezing, and itchy eyes show up year after year, it starts to feel like something you’re just supposed to manage. Treat the symptoms, get through the season, and hope they eventually outgrow it.

But what if there’s more to the story?

In this episode, I sat down with Dr. Ana Maria Temple, MD () to talk about what might actually be going on beneath the surface. Because when you start to zoom out, it’s often not just allergies. It’s the eczema as a baby, the constant congestion, the “sensitive” skin… and suddenly it doesn’t feel so random anymore.

Dr. Ana Maria walks through this idea of an “inflammation bucket”and how everyday things like food, environment, sleep, and exposures can slowly build up over time. And when that bucket gets too full, that’s when symptoms start to show up. Not because your child’s body is broken, but because it’s overwhelmed.

This conversation isn’t about doing everything perfectly or throwing out everything in your house overnight. It’s about understanding what might be contributing…and realizing that small, consistent shifts can actually make a meaningful difference over time.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re just managing symptoms without really understanding why they’re happening, this episode will give you a completely different lens to look through.

One thing I’ve learned after years of working with families is this:

Children’s immune systems are not all the same.

Some kids tolerate vaccines without any noticeable changes.

Others seem to have a harder time afterward.

That difference isn’t always random.

A child’s response to any immune challenge (like vaccines) can be influenced by things like:

-their overall immune health
-whether their body is under stress or illness at the time
-nutrient status (vitamin D, antioxidants, etc.)
-eczema or asthma
-genetics

Every child’s physiology is unique.

That’s exactly why .aricalhoun and I created a free video training where we walk through how parents can approach these decisions in a more informed and supportive way.

It’s easy to think of seasonal allergies as just…allergies. A runny nose, itchy eyes, something to manage for a few weeks out of the year.

But what if they’re actually your child’s first signal that something deeper is going on?

In this part of the conversation with Dr. Ana Maria Temple, MD (), she explains how symptoms don’t always stay isolated. What starts as seasonal allergies can sometimes evolve into eczema, asthma, food sensitivities, and more...not because something suddenly went wrong, but because the root issue was never addressed.

And one of the most powerful shifts? Realizing the body doesn’t work in separate parts. If your child’s face is inflamed, their body is experiencing inflammation too.

This isn’t about fear, it’s about awareness. Because when you start asking why instead of just treating what, everything changes.

I share this every year because WOW this shows perfectly what colors show up best under the water.

Prairie Lakes Healthcare System put together a great blog along with this image urging parents to think about swim safety in a new way.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children and it can happen SO QUICKLY.

These tips are great to know. To read the whole article just go to www.prairielakes.com and look under their health and wellness blogs.

Some key takeaways from the blog were:

🩱Neon colors, especially neon orange, are the most visible under water: either in a pool or open water

🩱Visibility is much better on the surface: encourage your children to stay in lifejackets or use floatation devices no matter how old or how good of a swimmer they are

🩱Think bright & contrasting: wear a color that contrasts the most with either the bottom of the pool, lake, river, or ocean

🩱Adult supervision is the most effective way to keep children safe in the water

Share this with your mama friends if you haven't already. This information is SO important.

PS- if you’re looking for bright suits, some of my favorite bright swimsuits I LOVE and .bella.swim … I’m not sponsored, I just truly love them!

There are moments that crack your heart open in the most unexpected ways.

This was my daughter’s first jiu jitsu tournament. She lost her first round but she didn’t fall apart. She stayed calm, grounded, steady. And in the middle of all the noise, there’s my husband, holding the baby, fully locked in on her, reminding her how proud he is. My 6-year-old playing nearby, life unfolding in every direction… and he’s right there, anchoring her.

When I look at this, I don’t just see him.
I see my dad. 🥹

Today is his birthday. And if you’ve ever lost a parent too soon, you know how layered a day like this can feel. The love doesn’t fade but neither does the ache.

I was 30 when my dad died. He was only 60. Too young for him, and far too soon for me to lose the person who made me feel the safest in the world. My biggest fan. The one who could calm any storm inside me.

I had just found my footing in my career and moved closer to home to be near him… and then, in a single phone call, everything changed.
The kind of day that rips your heart out and divides your life into before and after.

He wasn’t there to walk me down the aisle.
He hasn’t held my babies.

But if I’m being honest… I still talk to him. And I hear him. I feel his guidance, his reassurance, his voice cutting through when I need it most. It might sound a little “woo woo” but it’s one of the most meaningful parts of our relationship now. Maybe I’ll share more about that another day.

If you’re a mom carrying that same kind of loss, raising your babies while missing your own parent. I see you. It’s a grief that doesn’t leave… it just learns to live alongside the love.

And somehow, in moments like this, there’s also healing.

Because I see my dad in the way my husband loves my kids.
In the patience. The encouragement. The steady presence. The calm.

It reminds me that the love we were given doesn’t disappear.
It keeps moving forward through us, through them.

Happy birthday, Dad.
You are still my safe place. Always. 🤍

My favorite antiviral below!

Mucus is actually a vital part of our immune system, trapping particles we inhale like dust, allergens, and germs.

At baseline, mucus is usually clear and thin, but when the body encounters a trigger, like a virus or bacteria, white blood cells are sent to the mucus lining to change its consistency and color.

The color of snot can be helpful, but it’s NOT diagnostic.

☁️White or cloudy snot can indicate inflammation or irritation...

🟡 Yellow or green snot may indicate a possible infection - could be bacterial or viral,

🔴Pink or red snot can indicate dried blood,

⚫Brown or black snot can indicate old dried blood.

❗❗But, green or yellow snot doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bacterial infection, and antibiotics won’t help if it’s a viral infection.

To determine the cause, we need to look at other clues like the duration of symptoms, associated symptoms, and what’s going around.

If symptoms are worsening, not improving after 10-14 days, or accompanied by other red flags, it’s time to talk to your pediatrician.

One of the things I LOVE about natural medicines is we have many anti-viral treatments available like echinacea and more!

Homeopathy is one of my all-time favorite natural medicines!

Safe for all ages, during pregnancy, nursing, even as young as newborns!

There are so many options but if I had to choose my top 3 for Seasonal Allergies I would choose:

⭐Histaminum Hydrochloricum 30c:
Indicated for general allergies without any unique symptoms

⭐Allium Cepa 30c:
Indicated for allergies with an excessively runny nose and watery eyes

⭐Sabadilla 30c:
Indicated for allergies with excessive sneezing

I like 30c for this condition over 200c since allergies often occur for weeks if not months and need a daily dose of homeopathy to get results.

I love teaching you Doctor Moms my favorite natural medicines, tried and true, safe and effective!

PS- I also have an awesome Allergy Guide listing out more of my favorite supplements. I'll give it to you for free! Grab it here: https://medschoolformoms.com/allergy-guide/
