The best team I was ever on… wasn’t the one with the most talent.

As a team captain, I learned something I didn’t fully understand at the time:

Talent doesn’t build a strong team.
Standards do.

I’ve been on talented teams that underperformed.
And average teams that over-delivered.

The difference wasn’t skill.

It was:
what we held each other accountable to
what we addressed
what we let slide

That same pattern shows up in schools and organizations every day.

Talent might get attention…
but standards are what actually build a team.

If you’re leading a team right now, this is the question:

What are you allowing that’s shaping your culture?

A few days in Charlotte with some incredible leaders and coaches.

Years ago while working on my administrative credential, I had an assignment to choose a leadership book and I picked The Energy Bus by Jon Gordon. I had no idea how much that book would influence my leadership journey.

That book shaped how I built teams as a school administrator and how I thought about culture, energy, and the way leaders show up for the people around them.

This week I got to meet in person and spend time learning alongside others who care deeply about building strong teams and positive cultures.

I’m also proud to now be a Certified Jon Gordon Speaker and Trainer.

Excited to bring this work into Lead Like a Champion and continue helping teams build the kind of culture where people thrive.

this one is for you! 🪽

Pressure changes things.

That’s exactly why we put this team in an escape room.

This was the final experience of the LEAD Series, my signature leadership workshop — and we were intentionally testing leadership under pressure.

After weeks of building leadership presence, alignment, and decision-making, I wanted to see what would happen when the clock started ticking.

No slides.
No prep.
Just a team figuring it out.

And you could feel the shift.

Communication sharpened.
Some people stepped up.
Some got quieter.
Some adjusted quickly when something didn’t work.

That’s what pressure does.

It doesn’t create leadership.
It reveals it.

And what shows up in a room like that looks a lot like what leaders face every day.

Deadlines.
Uncertainty.
Limited information.
The need to decide and move.

It was fun, absolutely.

But it was also real.

And yes, both teams made it out in time.👏🏽

Really proud of this group and the growth I’ve seen over the past few weeks. Looking forward to continuing the work 🚀

This huddle shaped me.

The discipline.
The accountability.
The expectation.

Coming back as a mentor reminds me of something:

Leadership is a responsibility.

You don’t just play your role.
You build the people around you.

That mindset doesn’t stay in athletics.
It transfers into every room you lead.

And that’s the lens I bring into leadership development.

Raise the bar.
Build leaders.
Strengthen teams.

One Herd, One Team, One Legacy
Go Titans!

Leadership isn’t built in theory.

It’s built in rooms where decisions have to be made.

And one thing I keep seeing across teams right now?

Leaders are capable…
but they’re not confident.

They hesitate.
They second guess.
They avoid hard conversations.

Not because they don’t care.
But because no one has helped them build the muscle.

I’ve led in classrooms.
Across school districts.
Inside high pressure Division 1 programs.

And I’ve learned this:
Confidence comes from clarity.
From knowing the standard.
From having the tools to communicate directly.
From practicing leadership, not just talking about it.
That’s what Lead Like a Champion is about.

Helping leaders build real confidence
so they can lead strong teams
without shrinking when it matters most.

If you’re leading people and you want to build confident, high-performing teams, book a call. Let’s talk.

Data matters.
But people do too.

You can share the information
and still miss the human moment.

Strong leadership doesn’t mean doing more.
It means connecting better.

That’s how teams operate at a higher level.

Most of what I believe about leadership was shaped long before I ever had a title.

High-pressure teams teach you quickly what matters:
trust, communication, and knowing your role.

Great teams don’t rely on hype or motivation.
They rely on standards and connection.

That’s the foundation of Lead Like a Champion —
the leadership work I do with teams to strengthen culture, align people around clear expectations, and help leaders build environments where everyone can lead.

Leadership isn’t about one person at the top.
It’s about building teams that show up for each other when it matters most.

Most of my life has been spent working with teams.

In athletics.
In schools.
In leadership roles where culture, trust, and performance actually matter.

And one thing has always stood out to me:
great teams don’t happen by accident.

They’re built through clarity, connection, and a mindset that expects excellence.

I’ve been quietly working on something behind the scenes for a while now, and I’m genuinely excited to finally share this next chapter.

That work is Lead Like a Champion.

Lead Like a Champion is a leadership development space focused on helping leaders and teams raise the standard, tap into people’s strengths, and build cultures where everyone can lead with confidence.

I’ll be sharing more of this work here — lessons from athletics, leadership, and team-building — and what it really looks like to build strong teams.

If leadership, culture, and developing people matter to you, I’d love for you to follow along.
