Family Caregiving Isn’t Easy. Here’s How to Know When You Need Help.

Most older individuals are happy, healthy and self-reliant. However, the aging process eventually brings about physical and mental changes that can interfere with an active and independent lifestyle.

A decline in functional abilities doesn’t always necessitate a move to assisted living or a nursing home, but it does indicate a need for extra help to support a senior’s desire to age in place. Family members often step in to provide support and supervision, but hiring in-home help may be necessary at some point to address an elder’s increasing care needs.

Like most care decisions, knowing when to take this step can be difficult. One tip that experienced family caregivers often share with peers seeking advice in the Caregiver Forum is, “If you’re already wondering when it’s time to seek out more help, then the time is probably now.” Ultimately, adding a companion, personal care assistant or home health aide to your care team will benefit you and your loved one.

Consider the following factors to determine if home care could help your parents safely age in place.

How to stay close to your aging parents:

As your parents get older, you may find that more and more things get in the way of your relationship with them. Distance, work, kids, and busy lives can all interfere with our ability to stay close to our ageing parents. While life seems to get in the way, there are a number of creative ways you can continue to keep your ageing parents close through the years.

1. Family meetings

*Hosting family meetings is one of the most effective ways to stay close to your parents and spend time together as a family.

*Meeting in person is the best option, but if you're too far away to make the trip frequently, you can schedule phone chats or video calls to feel like you are all in the same place at the same time.

*You can also ask neighbours and family members who are closer to them to drop in and check on them on a regular basis.

2. Letters and photos

*Sending your parents mail is a great way of keeping in touch.
It doesn't have to be a lengthy letter, just a note to let them know you are thinking of them.

*You can type it on a computer so you can insert photos of yourself and your family to help them feel more connected to your life.

*Sometimes seniors don't like talking on the phone, so this can be a great compromise.

3. Ask questions

*Your parents might not want to bother you with the things going on in their daily lives, but in order to stay close, it's important for you to be aware of anything that may be worrying them.

*Ask them how they are feeling, how they are sleeping, if they have any aches and pains or, if appropriate, if they are in need of any money.

*Even if you can't help them directly, there are plenty of resources available to help seniors in need.

4. Listen

*You may spend a lot of time with your parents, but if you're not really taking the time to sit with them and listen, then you might not be making the most of your time together.

*As people grow older, they can sometimes feel like they have lost touch with the world or are becoming irrelevant to the people around them.

*When you really listen to your parents, it makes them feel important to you and valued.
Listening is one of the best ways you can show someone that you care.

Always remember ... they are the reason why we are here.

What Homecare means?

There are many benefits to having in-home care services for senior loved ones. Contact us online or call us at (832) 363-5062 to learn about our home care services and what we can do for you.

*Overall satisfaction. Generally, in-home care leads to a higher satisfaction with life, even when frailty is a factor.

*Respect for loved ones. Home care, done correctly, allows dignity, independence and maximum comfort for the care recipient.

*Health and wellness. Home care promotes healing. Research demonstrates that patients heal more quickly and comfortably at home versus in a hospital or nursing home setting and there is significantly less chance of rehospitalization when recuperation is at home. (Avalere Study 2008)

*Family centered care. Home care supports and keeps families together. Families tend to stay more involved with the care and maintain closeness with their loved one.

*Personalized care. Home care (mainly paid for by private and not government funds) can offer personalized care tailored to the needs of the family and the individual on any given day, whether that need is as simple as company and conversation or more complex, as in needs with personal care.

*Individual attention. Home care services are delivered one-on-one, assuring more private attention than a nursing home or a facility. There is no “waiting for one’s turn” when care is needed.

*Cost-effective care. Home care is usually cheaper than costs for a nursing home or even assisted living. A good rule is that 8 hours a day or less of home care will be less expensive than moving elsewhere.

*Home cooked meals. A home caregiver produces healthy and nutritional meals that appeal to the individual and can also keep a close eye on the amount of food eaten.

*Safe exercise routines. A personalized daily exercise program can be implemented and followed through, with the added safety of a qualified professional being present.

*A comfortable setting. One can never underestimate the benefit of the familiarity of home, whether that be just enjoying a favorite chair or enjoying the daily cup of tea in a familiar corner.

*Rides to appointments. Home care offers accompaniment on transportation to and from various appointments, social activities or errands, allowing families more free time together as well as additional peace of mind.

In recent years, home care providers have developed successful models in care coordination, prescription management, disease management and behavioral education. They have pioneered innovative and cost‑effective uses of technology and therapeutics to deliver high quality, client-centered, well-coordinated care across the health care delivery system, helping millions of Americans live safely and independently at home.

Why is home health important in healthcare?
Safety, Comfort and Convenience

Research shows that elderly adults recover faster, with fewer complications, at home than in a hospital. With home health care, patients can get help managing their medications. This prevents harmful drug interactions, which can help you avoid going to the hospital.
