A lot of herb gardeners don't know this, but  almost always late fall and winter is the best time of the year to plant perennial seeds.  Mother Nature knows best and that is when she does it.   The germination on many seed requires cold weather to allow the warmth of spring to bring the seed out of…

One of my favorite herbs of all time is Passion Flower (or some folks call it Maypop). http://www.sandmountainherbs.com/passion_flower_american_maypop.html This plant has one of the prettiest flowers that you will ever see (See the picture below), but what is really fun about this plant is the huge seed pods full of gelatinous seeds. I used to pop them in the cotton fields as a kid. There was so many plants in the 50s and 60s here in North Alabama that you could not walk across the fields hardly they were so covered over. The farmers would cut it with their tractor's cutting hars and maypop was spread everywhere. Unfortunately, today the maypop is harder to find in the landscape because of the invention of Round-up. Modern day agriculture and roadside spraying makes it difficult on this plant to thrive in Alabama like it once did.

You can cook the flavor off the seeds and make a syrup or jelly. It is delicious on pancakes. You can also make a great tasting wine out of it. Passionflower is used by big canneries to make tropical mixed fruit.

Easy to propagate from root and is not invasive. However, if you want to grow it in your backyard, keep it's root contained. It will do better. It grows good on a trellis or fence. Time to plant is now Watch this video about maypops... http://youtu.be/ko7p6lk1xjc
