This week LifeSouth and HCA Florida North Florida Hospitall celebrated the unveiling of a commemorative plaque honoring umbilical cord blood donation and the mothers who made the decision to donate their baby’s cord blood to LifeSouth. The plaque represents 138 patients across the United States and the world who received a cord blood transplant collected at HCA Florida North Florida Hospital. We are grateful to the doctors, nurses and practitioners for their dedication to cord blood donation as many more patients will continue to benefit from this lifesaving gift. When Gracie was 6 months old, she was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, Hurler Syndrome, and doctors said the only possibility of a cure and best chance was a transplant using donated cord blood. Cord blood can be used by patients who need a marrow transplant because it is rich in the same kind of blood producing cells. Today, Gracie is an accomplished 17-year-old, who just graduated with her A.A. degree, on the anniversary of her transplant, and will graduate high school this week as valedictorian.
