Think you can skip a colonoscopy because you don’t have symptoms? That’s a common myth that can harm your health. In fact, colorectal cancer often develops before any symptoms appear, which is why colonoscopies are such an important screening tool. They detect colorectal cancer before symptoms appear, giving you the best chance for early, effective treatment.

Adults of average risk should start screening at 45. If you're at a higher risk, talk to your doctor about the right time to start screening.

When Jay and Karen Garrett reflect on their health journeys, one word stands out: gratitude.

After receiving compassionate, life-changing care at Adventist HealthCare through cancer treatments, cardiac care and recovery, they chose to turn their appreciation into action. Their generous support of the Shady Grove Medical Center Forensic Medical Unit helps provide critical care and support for survivors of domestic violence.

For the Garretts, giving back is a way to ensure others experience the same compassion and hope that meant so much to them. Their story shows how exceptional care doesn’t just heal — it inspires.

At Adventist HealthCare, we believe that better health means more than treating illness — it means nourishing families and supporting whole-health care.

That’s why we created the Food as Medicine program, addressing food insecurity in Montgomery County by providing fresh produce, pantry staples and ongoing nutrition education.

In partnership with community organizations, families receive weekly food, support and connection and the program is grounded in kindness, dignity and respect for every participant.

One parent shared how much they appreciate not just the food, but the caring approach of the team.

We’re proud to help nourish children and adults alike — supporting better health for today and a stronger, healthier community for tomorrow.

Did you know? Both men and women need routine colonoscopies starting at age 45 or earlier depending on risk factors like family history. There is an increased incidence of adults being diagnosed with colorectal cancer at a younger age, and experts aren't sure why. Talk to your doctor at your next annual physical about your risk factors and what screening is right for you.
