Could pet allergies be causing your itchy eyes and runny nose, even when you don’t have any pets? The answer is yes!

It may surprise people, but you do not have to be in direct contact with an animal to be exposed to animal allergens. Because of their aerodynamic properties, mammalian allergens like fur from dogs, cats, mice, rabbits, hamsters, and even horses can easily become airborne, attach to clothes and hair, and can spread between environments. Studies have shown the major cat allergen Fel d 1 can be frequently found in homes without pets and in public buildings, including schools, day-care centers, and hospitals.

If you have already been exposed to the fur allergen, then there are high chances that you are already sensitized and would suffer from an allergy attack on the second exposure.

Knowing your specific allergen triggers can help you manage your environment and exposure.

What do dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, and horses have in common? They are domestic pets with fur that can cause allergies! Pet animals have many different body components that can be a reason for allergies including dander or fur, saliva, urine, and f***s.

Interestingly the type of antigen that causes allergy from furry animals like cats, dogs, horses, and rabbits has a specific characterization and a unique mechanism for sensitizing our immune systems. Knowing your specific trigger can help manage exposure and reduce symptoms.

When choosing between giving up a pet or dealing with the symptoms of pet fur allergies, most of us choose to deal with it. Here are a few tips and tricks to manage your fur allergy symptoms:
● Use HEPA filters in your house so that the air can be constantly cleansed.
● Remove any carpets and rugs to prevent the entrapment of fur and keep pets off furniture and bedding.
● Clean frequently and thoroughly to remove dust and dander, washing articles such as couch covers and pillows, curtains, and pet beds.
● Bathe your pet weekly to help reduce the level of dander.
● Anti-allergy medications (anti-histamines like Zyrtec and corticosteroids can help manage inflammation.
● Don’t put all the blame on your pet! Many allergy sufferers are sensitive to more than one allergen. Getting an accurate test for your allergens can help you manage all the causes of your symptoms.

Be confident in the accuracy of testing results for patients with very high levels of sigE, even with diluted serum. New research resented at the EAACI Hybrid Conference 2022 shows that common airborne allergens (dust mites) and food allergens (cow's milk) can be accurately identified even when the serum is diluted. Of three major systems, NOVEOS(R) is the most accurate at identifying sigE related to dust mite allergies!

Almost 1.4 billion people around the world are suffering from grass allergies - the biggest allergy trigger of all plant allergies (including w**d and tree pollen).

Grass allergy season begins in spring and lasts through summer. Climate change is linked to increased pollen concentrations and longer growing seasons. That's bad news for allergy sufferers as the severity of the grass pollen season may increase by 60% in the next 10 years.

It's tough to avoid grass, but not all grasses are the same. Identifying the specific grass triggering an allergic reaction can help people suffering from allergies avoid that grass in the future.

If you are allergic to grass pollen, you may develop allergy symptoms when you eat certain fruits and vegetables that are botanically related to grass. This cross-reaction is called Oral Allergy Syndrome.

Fruits and vegetables related to grass include:
- Peaches
- Watermelon
- Oranges
- Tomatoes
- White Potatoes

It's the peak season for grass pollen allergies! Grass grows in most parts of the world, and as with other plants, each type of grass has its own pollen. Since grass is so prevalent, it is very difficult to avoid entirely.

There are a few things you can do to reduce symptoms of grass allergies:
1. Monitor pollen counts: Be aware of when pollen is high to limit time outdoors.
2. Dress to minimize skin contact with pollen: Sunglasses and a hat to keep pollen out of your eyes and off your hair; long pants and sleeves keep pollen away from your skin.
3. Mowing the Grass: Wear a protective mask when mowing grass or doing yard work to help filter out airborne particulates.
4. Change clothes when you come in from being outside, leave your shoes by the door, and wipe down pets to limit the spread of pollen through the house. Showering can help remove pollen from hair and skin.
5. Keep your doors and windows closed, and use high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters to help reduce pollen in the home.

Grass pollen allergy, primarily causing allergic rhinitis (also known as hay fever), affects up to 40% of the European population and up to 30% of the North American population.

Most people who are allergic to grass are allergic to grass pollen, and not the individual blades of grass. Grass pollen is lightweight and travels on wind and air currents, making it easy to spread and very common to breathe in.

You can be allergic to one type of grass pollen, but not allergic to all types of grass pollen. There are over 12,000 species of grass worldwide, making an accurate diagnosis important for managing grass allergies.
Getting an accurate allergy diagnosis is empowering. At HYCOR, we believe that people with an allergy improve their quality of life when they know exactly what is causing their symptoms.

Do you know a graduate going to University in the fall? About 9% of college students have been diagnosed with asthma and 22% have allergies. A new environment exposes students to different allergy and asthma triggers.

Here are some tips from the AAAAI (American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology) on how to be proactive during this transition:

- Don’t take chances. Know what triggers your allergic disease and stay away from these allergens. Be aware of signs that you need to seek medical attention.

- Keep prescriptions filled and up-to-date. Always have your medications on hand, including your autoinjectable epinephrine and quick-relief inhaler.

- Consider talking to your friends and roommates about your allergies and asthma. Letting those close to you know about your health, and the signs of a medical emergency, can help you stay safe.
