Wandering or elopement can be one of the most stressful safety concerns for families of children with autism. Elopement is not a behavior done to be defiant. In ABA, it is viewed as communication. A child may be trying to escape a demand, access something they want, or seek sensory input.

Supporting safety starts with understanding the reason behind the behavior and putting proactive strategies in place. Visual supports, teaching functional communication, environmental safety tools, and consistent response plans can make a meaningful difference.

ABA therapy focuses on reducing risk while helping children learn safer ways to communicate their needs and move through their environment with greater independence. Families are not alone, and support is available!

Many families assume that peer play only happens in clinic or school settings, but peer interaction can absolutely be taught through in-home ABA therapy too.

Through guided park outings, play dates, and structured activities with friends or siblings, children can practice sharing, taking turns, starting conversations, and navigating social situations in real world settings. These moments allow skills to be taught where they actually happen.

If Peer Play is a goal, maybe you're wanting to work on your child integrating into preschool and are worried about social skills, talk with your BCBA about adjusting their behavior plan to reflect that goal!

Sometimes in-clinic ABA therapy isn't the first step! Check out our in-home page for information on how in-home and in-community ABA works!

Clinic based ABA therapy can be incredibly helpful for many children, but it is not always the right fit right away for every learner.

Some children with autism are sensitive to loud noises, bright lights, or busy environments. For these children, a clinic setting can feel overwhelming at first and may take time to adjust to. In some cases, starting therapy in a quieter, more familiar environment, like in your home, can help build comfort and confidence before transitioning to a clinic space if that is the later goal!

Every child is different, and finding the right environment is an important part of meaningful progress!
