Just found this nice video on the dam that provides history and overview. Thank you to the YouTuber that made this!
He did leave out that in 2022, my brother-in-law, Scott Wilkerson, was pulled over and drowned while his son watched. I was there at the hospital alongside his wife (my sister), two of his three children, and my parents, watching as they tried to resuscitate him for over 30 minutes.
Scott loved tubing along the lazy river, I’m sure he would have been saddened to see it go, as many of you in the comments have expressed - some with respect and questions, some with anger and resentment. Those are normal human emotions and I understand that this holds great memories for many.
However, when comments turn nasty over something that has been in the works for years and is done, there’s no amount of cussing an accusing that’ll change this fact, it simply pours salt on the wounds of those families who look at the dam in despair and pain.
To those in comments and to the guy who came to the dam and said that he’d bring his sniper and start picking people off (prompting the police to be called). Please, you can vent but don’t let your emotions get the better of you, it will solve nothing beside grow anger in your heart - even if it momentarily makes you feel good behind a screen.
I’m going to be archiving this page and turning off comments, as it’s time to move on from this lingering weight for three years. Which all started while working for the Bluegrass ADD (who were working on the renovation application), then I subsequently did my research talking to many government agencies to obtain the data and run the numbers against many of the logical concerns, leading to the petition - which many signed in support for removal and KDFWR referenced in their proposal and acquiring of the many permits needed and obstacles faced over the years.
Thank you all for your support and understanding. Even though Great Crossing will be different without the dam, I’m sure with time, it’ll still be a beautiful recreational spot where great, new memories will be had for generations to come.
God Bless ❤️
