We missed Menopause Awareness Month in October, but wanted to bring up the subject of new guidelines that the American Urological Association created for the symptoms of GSM (genitourinary symptoms of menopause).
It's not a topic that is talked about much, but the symptoms and complications of GSM can be significant. For example, recurrent urinary tract infections can lead to hospitalizations related to sepsis.
Vaginal estrogen is safe and effective for treating the symptoms of GSM, even in women with a history of breast cancer.
If you are experiencing symptoms of GSM, consider talking about what treatment options may work for you.
Prior to this, universally accepted guidance for the treatment of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) didn’t exist.
