This is why Dad should not be your personal photographer. If I had a nickel for every time someone turned down a newborn session because “oh, I’ll just have my husband take pictures”, I would have a couple nickels. 🤓

I’m going to hold your hand when I say this, if you do not invest in the first two weeks that they are little, you are going to regret it. I hear all the time “I wish I would have (had this with my firstborn, done this when she was little, known how much I would need this)”. No amount of selfies or spouse pictures will compare to a session where you and your family is the focus. If this family would have relied on their iPhones, they would never have these images where their memories are captured. Not just as an image, but as a core memory from the day they had their session.

Newborn sessions are more than just pictures, they show you what it felt like years later. They create memories, they build relationships, they help with healing.

If you needed to be called out, I hope this calls you out.

Whether you book your newborn session with me or your other favorite photographer, invest in it. Invest in the fleeting time that they are this small.

It’s timeeeeee!!!!

Birth photography is still in its itty bitty baby stages here in the US. People either haven’t heard of it, or have heard of it wrongly (that it’s just for THAT moment). These galleries I deliver are often overflowing with love, memories they would have forgotten, triumph, hardship, and ultimately memories that they will hold on to for the rest of their lives.

Spending thousands and thousands on a wedding photographer, for a wedding that you could redo, but not investing in the moment you met your baby is something I will never understand (and that’s okay if you don’t want those images public, they don’t ever have to be)—you NEVER get that day back, you can never meet them again, you will never give birth to that baby ever again.

If you’re one of the many people unsure about birth photography, I urge you to talk with an experienced photographer and learn about it—maybe before you’re ever even expecting a baby.

I for one, would be happy to share my passion with you.

I did something fun the other day 🤩🤩

Often times in birth work, there is little to show of your work unless you are a birth photographer. Doulas are often left without photos that show them working, unique images for content creation (which is how they grow…), and unless the family that you supported also has a photographer AND allows for images to be shared—most of the time, we’re all outta luck.

Mock births or mini branding sessions for these reasons are what helps doulas practice and gain experience, but also allows them to get used to working while being photographed or with distractions in a no risk environment. Mock births have been a thing for a while, but they are typically large scale and there are none in the great state of Pennsylvania 😅

No, these images won’t show the true emotion of birth, but they show the support, the details, and the intention behind what birth workers strive to show for families. There are so many ways to do a mini branding for doulas, but often these are the ones that yield the best, authentic images (especially if everyone has had a baby and/or attended birth previously).

You’ll have to keep an eye out on page for more images. Needless to say, these colors are gorgeous and a labor zone you can manipulate to be pretty is always such a fun experience.

Surrender.

It comes in many forms, but the surrender during labor is one of the most powerful.

Sinking down into the breaking of yourself to make way for your baby is truly one of the most difficult, painful, and yet addicting, exhilarating, and divine experiences a woman can encounter.

Fearfully and wonderfully made.

As Judging Round 2 starts for IAPBP 2026's Image of the Year is underway, it's always a time of nerves and anticipation, self doubt, lots of excitement, and honestly just the biggest rollercoaster ever.

They do not tell you anything during the process 😅

Last year, I submitted from the third birth I ever shot, one picture, and not even a thought I would place anywhere. Believe my surprise when I saw my image Top 20% WORLDWIDE from the very first year of attending birth – it looked like this 😮😲🤯

This year, I had a budget to submit, I asked a ton of you for feedback, and I submitted a handful of images. Obviously I hope I will place somewhere, but even if I don't I will still use the submissions as a way to get the word out about birth photography and it's impact.

Coming up in March, the voting will open to you–the public. After this second round ends, I will start posting the images I submitted to bring awareness and I would love if you would share the post with the image you loved. Each post will have a link to go vote, and if you find the image moving, please go vote.

Time after time, almost without fail, I hear the same thing from families "I never knew I needed this until I had it, and I cannot believe I would have went without." People DON'T know. They do not understand the impact looking back on your birth can have. The way it can bring back moments, memories, heal trauma, and change the way we all view birth.

Birth work is important. But it needs more than a handful of us fighting for it.

Isn’t this gorgeous?

My second favorite part at births is the placenta and sac tour after baby has arrived.

These organs are incredible. They are the only organ that a body grows from nothing, and then expels when it has served it’s purpose.

You’ll never convince me there isn’t a Creator.

Intermittent Fetal Monitoring (aka the Doppler)
One of the recent births I was at, mom opted for the Doppler as opposed to continuous fetal monitoring (which studies show that cont monitoring can lead to more interventions).

The hospital had her on a schedule of doppler every hour and every fourth hour an NST.

This allowed for movement, comfort, and such a peaceful, no intervention labor. Each check took about 3 minutes to find, listen, and clean up from—and then we were right back to whatever movement mom needed to do.

Ask for it.

If you are low risk, if baby is low risk, ASK and ADVOCATE for those rights. This was the first birth that mom actually asked for intermittent monitoring and the first birth that I could count on one hand how many times I saw the nurse because she had no reason to come in and fix a monitor. :)

Your birth is worth it.

I often share on my website and with my clients about my faith and the way it’s drawn me to serving birth, documenting both it and motherhood, and how it’s quite literally the only thing keeping my business going.

Self employment looks like a Jack of all trades and a master of none. It’s taxes, expenses, balancing life with work, marketing yourself (something people have degrees in), fighting against broken systems that censor and fear monger, and still trying to find the time to slow down and build relationships with and truly cheer on the families that have connected with me.

It’s slow seasons, busy seasons, “I don’t know when the next inquiry will come”—“Ope, there it is!” This work has been two years of really high highs and really low lows and the only thing that will get you through it is the belief that He has good plans.

I wasn’t gifted a passion for birth and the ability to capture memories and moments by chance—at least I choose to believe that—if He gave me the passion, He will continue to help me see it through.

He has Good Plans.
