Has it been a while? With my new hip - I am stronger than I was before. I am, the $36 thousand dollar man. And wouldn't it be a waste to just let that new hip sit? Come experience the difference a of a titanium driven deep tissue massage!

A long time ago I made a choice to attempt to "live by the schedule". Meaning: The schedule will fill. The schedule will open. And in it, will come an ebb & flow of a true busy/rest work cycle. Not bound by the traditional hours of employment or core hours where it's mostly the cycle of on/off. Since then, I have been fascinated at how it actually does work. It just works. I seem to get rest, and my schedule fills almost like magic. Whenever I think: things are a bit light...give it 24-48 hrs. Conversely, I've wondered sometimes, when will I have a solid day unscheduled?
And in that spirit of embracing life by the schedule, I was going to post about some availability I had. But within 30 minutes it has now become a post for: Does anyone want my last available times this week?
Friday 8/15 @ 1pm or we could start later.
Saturday 8/16 @ 12pm or we could start sooner.
Text me. We can get you booked.

How odd is this? A Deep Tissue Massage Therapist has exposed himself to the 5-gram pressure world? I sure did. And for those clients of mine that see the words "Lymphatic Drainage", yep! I did it for you. I have new knowledge. New techniques. New ways to improve your session so that we definitely achieve as much lymphatic movement as possible.
New to my massage? By learning these techniques and gaining this knowledge; I can speak even more specifically to your lymphatic needs as well as customize your massage session in even newer effective ways.
Post Op? Tummy tuck, breast augmentation, orthopedic replacements or surgery of any kind? Schedule a "Custom Massage" and let's incorporate the "Free Flow" protocol into your 60 or 90 minute session. Message me directly if you have any questions about Lymphatic Drainage massage.

I'm also trained in a Facial Rejuvenation Protocol. While I'm not planning on practicing this protocol specifically, I do love the techniques and approach to facial lymphatic massage. I plan to incorporate these techniques in my existing head, neck & face work. Questions? Please ask!

He took care of me 12 years ago and this year. He is a very friendly, positive and caring individual. He holds at least one patent on hip hardware so he is an innovator in his field. I was right to put my trust in him.

Shout out to Jared! He was my Post Op PT and he was great. I wanted to be sure I got my butt going as quickly as I could without being bad, and he honored my goals. So we worked together to get me ready to continuing PT. Thank you Jared for all the excellent exercises (I no longer hate you!), my PT says you did amazing!

Therapist Log::Post Op::Day 63
It is time to wrap up "Therapist Log::Post Op" series. It has been an amazing experience. I cannot believe it won a Peabody Award. And nor should you. Because it didn't. I won something better: An increase of pain free hip movement by about 86,400 seconds/day.
As my last entry regarding recovery, I would just say to anyone thinking specifically of full hip arthroplasty (left or right). If you have been seen by an ortho, and seen your x-rays and have been told you could benefit from a mechanical implant.
It is true. However, you could benefit is different than you will benefit. There is so much of this that simply comes down to you.
You will need to be physically and mentally prepared for the event.
You will absolutely need something to trigger your sense of humor.
Plan for the abyss. Time stands still; and pain receptors begin to overwhelm the tylenol/advil/codone haze. Have something funny nearby. Not a book. You will not be able to read. A video. Or your own personal standup comedian. My son Erik has a million voices (those who know, know). And playing Scottish Highlander or Irish Door to Door Body Soap Salesmen really triggers the best medicine.
You will also need to conjure your inner:
A) Ninja
B) Drill Sergeant
C) Coach
D) Dark Overlord with a Fiery Whip
Take you pick - but when you are EXHAUSTED from putting on your shoes. Or your overall soreness level is too high. Or you've done your PT exercises 3 days in a row ALREADY!
*As long as you are not experiencing specific symptoms you've been told to watch out for*
You MUST submit yourself to whomever you have chosen to lead you through weeks 2-(rest of your life) as your inner holder of accountability.
When I had my LEFT hip replaced 12 years ago, I went right back to my old activities as soon as I could. I would ride my bike 11 miles to work. Then at lunch 2 miles to the PT office. They would look at me sideways as I took of my helmet and kicked off my clip ins.
And say: here...warm up on the recumbent bicycle. I'd tell them what I just said; and they would look horrified. As such, my left hip healing process - while complete is fraught with issues because I did NOT do my PT exercises. Range of Motion (ROM), and strength in the tiny rotators has never been fully restored. My left iliopsoas complex is so easily injured and so weak.
So this time. I am preaching the teaching and walking the path. I have submitted to my PT in almost everything, and we've found alternates for the stuff I find to emotionally difficult ;)
We are working also to UNfork my left hip, while micro strengthening, stretching an improving ROM in the recovering right hip. Last week I got clearance to start riding my bike, and making the "frog kick" motion in the water while swimming.
And so as my last post op entry workout I chose to go swimming and ride my bike! At 6am the sun is so low on the horizon. I usually do 2 laps crawl, and 1 lap breastroke. Rest for half minute and repeat until I desire change. Then I try some single sprint-rest-sprints. Swimming is all about form and time. And I put in a solid 30 mins! Probably got a quarter mile in! Dried off and hit the road again on my bike. I had set a goal. But my inner coach suggested I reevaluate the distance I was targeting suggesting it might be too far. Fine I'll adjust. But as I approached the first checkpoint...I felt too good. No argument from the coach. instead we set a new checkpoint. Again, I felt too good. It was just so nice to enjoy an activity I have been limited from for so long. I kept checking my heart rate and made sure I wasn't over doing it. So I went to whole 8.1miles. My PT said 10 was MAX! So, way to go Sean. Stay tuned. I got other plans for posting here.

Deep Massage Thoughts With Sean...

I want to take a moment to honor my clients. Because of them, I am able to operate my private Massage Therapy Practice. And that affords moments like today, everyday. What happened? Nothing special. But, then again, everything special.
My sessions never last less than the scheduled time. I love being able to go over. Sometimes just a couple, or five. Sometimes more, but the fact is: the massage is over, when the massage is over. Not having that "turn around time" pressure is wonderful. My clients get to chill in the studio after the work is done and I exit. I invite clients to just relax. Stretch & wiggle if they like, but no rush. My whole "Customer Experience Time" as the service industry calls it - has been engineered to be excellent.
But when I got to listen to my son Erik, as he was interacting with his client at the end of their session, today; I thought truly: that was a healing session. And I know that is what it is like for my clients too! Even though it is just Erik & I practicing out of my home studio; I absolutely love my setup/situation. I really have the best clients. Thank you for allowing us to be your therapists. -Sean

Therapist Log::Post Op::Day 42
I am still moving pain free! Or at least I no longer have pain that causes me to walk like peg-leg pirate. My PT has given me new exercises and they feel great. High step slow marching. Lateral/Side Stepping. Reverse walking and squats.
They definitely make me sweat and I have to focus on breathing or I might squawk like a chicken. But they feel great.
And of course paying for it later with soreness - as is the natural order of pain!
You do the work. You work through the pain. You become stronger.
For so long my arthritic hip would foil that plan.
But now I think I am getting back in the saddle!

Therapist Log::Post Op::Day 39
Pop the Champagne and Gimme that Lamp Shade! Oh baby, today has been wonderful! I am so happy about where I am in my recovery that I must simply post about it.
-Flashback...
Post Op::Day 32 thru 35
Just got done with PT and I am in pain. Even with a cane it is hard not to walk like the tin man. WTF?!? [Actually, insert far more horrible strings of bad expletives and curses than just, wtf...]
I WANT TO FEEL BETTER! So, with my cane in hand I still go for my walks. By Thursday evening I've dropped to a 33min/mi pace. Leg raises, bridges, ab/adductions all of it..ug..why is gravity attacking me with such a vengeance?
-Friday & Saturday::Post Op::Day 36 thru 38
4 walks. Each getting so much easier to do. Like noticeably.
15 sets of calf raises. Balance improving. Now I can wax on AND wax off.
9 sets of leg lift & ab+adduct. Breathing through them no longer involves kitten cries or whale calls.
12 sets of bridges. I'm getting so good, I might release a how to video.

Which brings us to last night & today. Even half asleep I realized during my nocturnal mecca to the altar of porcelain I was experiencing zero pain. When my eyes popped open at 5:00am and I got out of bed: I paid close attention to see if it was a fluke!
I was not fluked!
No pain?! I am not in pain. I am not in pain!
Let me say that again for people with slow internets...I am moving today, without pain.
That tight belt of pain wrapping around me like some cage match gone wrong? It is gone! Obviously there are still a few specific sore areas...but so as long as I do not over do it, I might be able to turn one pain free day...into, is it possible, 2?

Thus I see no reason to change course. I look forward to opening my schedule up to Level 2! On Friday June 6th. But honestly, I do not have availability until Monday June 16th. But should a cancellation occur, this will be the first place I post!

Thank you all! Especially if you actually read all that. I know, sheesh, right? -Sean
