Many people struggle with food sensitivities and I am seeing more and more of them in my practice.

They can be tricky to identify, because unlike an allergy that has an immediate reaction, food sensitivities have what is called a “delayed onset reaction”.

What is a “delayed onset reaction”?
This means that your body can react to a food you are sensitive to days after you eat it! With that kind of lag-time it can be hard to pinpoint what food or foods may be related to any symptom(s) you are experiencing.

What symptoms are associated with food sensitivities?
They can be much broader than the gastrointestinal issues people may think of – migraines, fatigue, foggy thinking, joint aches and sinus congestion are a few of the delayed onset health issues I have personally experienced or regularly see in my practice.

It’s time for early Spring crops!

I am excited to have my hands back in the soil – wonderfully grounding and energizing.

Broccoli, brussels sprouts & cauliflower are my pick for early Spring crops – they are great detoxifiers and are delicious.
Some of my favorites are cauliflower fried rice with veggies & chicken, roasted broccoli with a bit of paprika and chili powder for a hint of spice, and shaved brussels sprouts in any cold salad.

Yum - can’t wait until June for harvest!

What is Nutritional Detoxification?

Your body performs some level of detoxification every day, removing the toxic byproducts of digestion & metabolism, as well as drug and environmental toxicants. Unfortunately, our lifestyles and environment increase the “toxic load” placed on our body, often resulting in an accumulated back log.

What can you do to help your body?

A nutritional detox program outlines specific foods to eat, foods to avoid and specific nutrient supplementation to support the body’s liver, kidneys & excretion systems to reduce this toxic backlog, and with it the health disturbances often associated.

A body under stress cannot perform at its optimal health and wellness. Since a backlog of accumulated toxins places the body in a state of stress, you may experience symptoms of this stress through chronic health disturbances including the “safe” storage of toxins in fat deposits!
Benefits of a nutritional detox program include and are not limited to:
§ Increased energy & vitality
§ Weight loss/ break through a weight loss plateau
§ Clearing of toxins released from stored fat during weight loss
§ Shaper thinking, improved mood, and more restful sleep
§ Development of healthy habits to enhance your lifestyle

How, do we get enough vitamin D?

First, include vitamin D rich foods in your diet. The best sources are naturally found in healthy animal fats, foods like salmon, sardines and egg yolks; this is the D3 form of the vitamin, the same form produced in our skin. Plant based foods like spinach, kale and collard greens contain the vitamin D2 form; this plant form does not raise activate vitamin D levels in the body as well as the D3 form in animal fats and produced in our skin. Other foods which do not naturally contain vitamin D may be fortified (vitamin D is added to them) such as cow milk, plant based milks, yogurt, orange juice and cereals.

Second, get outdoors! Spend short periods of time outdoors without sunscreen if you can safely do so, depending on your health and risk factors. I am not suggesting to spend a day at the beach without your sunscreen and hat, perhaps a morning cup of green tea in a sunny spot, or an afternoon stroll around the block.

Lastly, supplementing vitamin D is an option for those who cannot achieve healthy levels through the body’s own production and what foods you eat. When considering supplementing any nutrient, it is important for you to consult with a professional, such as myself, who can guide you to a quality supplement, in a form that is readily absorbable and in a dosage that is safe and effective for you.

Reach out to me, I am happy to guide you in supporting healthy vitamin D levels!

Vitamin D - The Sunshine Vitamin!☀️

We often refer to Vitamin D as the sunshine vitamin because our skin produces it in response to direct sun exposure; it is easily the most asked about nutrient by my clients.

So why so much attention on vitamin D? In its active form in the body Vitamin D plays many critical roles in key body systems & functions including - our immune system, bone density, mood, skin, hormone production, cardiac health, energy, and metabolic rate. Low levels of vitamin D are found in those who suffer from autoimmune diseases, obesity, anxiety and depression, and though it is too early to make any definitive conclusions, data is suggesting there may be a greater risk for Covid-19 infection and complications in those with low vitamin D levels. Wow, that’s a powerful nutrient!

As we take charge of our health and wellness, it makes sense then to ask – how can I support healthy vitamin D levels in my body?

Our skin produces vitamin D in response to direct sunlight - sounds simple right? Not necessarily. In our modern world, most of us do not spend much of our day outside, and when we do, we may be taking steps to protect our skin from sun damage, covering with clothing and sunscreen. Where we live is a factor as well, so for all of us in the Northeast, direct sunlight is limited during winter months. Additionally, those of us with darker skin tones have more melanin in the skin reducing the UVB ray absorption that is needed for vitamin D production.
