If you follow a plant-based diet, keep reading! 🥦

A plant-based or vegan diet has plenty of known health benefits, but it may also adversely affect bone strength. 🦴

A new study investigated the role strength training plays in the bone health of people who follow a vegan diet. Findings show vegans who regularly performed resistance exercises had better bone micro-structure than vegans who did not engage in resistance training. 🏋️‍♀️

The deficit in bone micro-structure is likely due to the absence of collagen and other enzymes found in animal products. Luckily, paying extra attention to strengthening bone density via exercise and ensuring you get collagen from other sources can address the problem. 🍄 Plants do not have naturally occurring collagen like animals do, but instead, have their own beneficial proteins that can mirror the effects of collagen.

In short, if you're on an entirely plant-based diet it's important to adjust your exercise as needed so it's supporting areas of your health that may need more attention. 👀

Lettuce Wraps are a great snack or shareable appetizer. 🥬 Leave out the chicken to make this completely vegan!

- 1 Tbsp avocado oil (olive or coconut oil would work well too)
- 1 lb. ground chicken
- 6 - 8 oz. button or baby bella mushrooms, finely minced
- 1 (8oz.) can water chestnuts, drained and minced
- 2 green onions, sliced
- 2 tsp fresh ginger, minced
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/4–1/3 cup coconut aminos, GF tamari, or soy sauce
- Lettuce leaves (butter lettuce, romaine hearts, or iceberg lettuce work well)

🥘 Prepare the filling by heating the oil in a medium sauté pan over medium heat. Add chicken and cook until fully cooked all the way through, about 6-8 minutes.

Add mushrooms, water chestnuts, and green onions. Cook 3-5 minutes, or until mushrooms are softened. Add ginger, garlic, and 4 Tbsp coconut aminos and cook 1 minute longer, stirring to coat chicken mixture. Add additional sauce as desired (remember you don’t want it too wet, or it will make eating your lettuce wraps a very messy, soggy experience). Scoop mixture onto lettuce cups.

3 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with Graves' disease. 😱

Graves' disease is a thyroid disorder that causes chronic inflammation 🔥 and an overabundance of thyroid hormone (called hyperthyroidism). Thyroid hormones impact so many metabolic processes that a hyperactive thyroid can affect nearly every organ in your body. It can lead to blood sugar imbalances and cardiac issues. 💔

Why is the thyroid gland SO important? 🤔

The thyroid gland is an important endocrine organ that produces hormones to regulate our metabolism. 👉 We need our thyroid gland to work properly!

💔 When the thyroid is out of balance, it can trigger hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is characterized by an overactive thyroid gland that produces and releases an excess of thyroid hormone into the body. It is often caused by overactive thyroid nodules, an attack on the immune system (for example, Graves' disease), the consumption of foods or medications that contain high levels of iodine, or a viral infection. 😮 Hypothyroidism, on the other hand, is associated with a lack of thyroid hormone that can occur as a result of a variety of different factors (including iodine deficiency, Hashimoto's, damage to the thyroid or surgical removal).

Whether your thyroid is low or high, it's very important to look into potential food sensitivities, nutrient depletions, stressors, possible chronic infections, toxins, gut health and more. ⭐ We need to look at the whole picture to get to the root cause of your health concerns.
