'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the barn the horses were settled in their stalls on the farm.
Their halters were hung on the stall doors once more. At the door if you listened you could hear all the snores.
With Kate in her muck boots and me covered in hay, we just left the barn after a very long day.
When out in the back field there seemed such a ruckus. We ran out back to see what all the fuss was.
The moon was out bright, it reflected the light, from the puddles of rain, that had ended this night.
And what a surprise, we could not believe our eyes. Stood a whole herd of deer. There was nothing to fear.
Considering the night, it seemed only right. We stood there and gave each a name for the night. There was Dasher, a Dancer, a Prancer, and Vixen. Of course there was Comet, and Cupid, a Donner and a Blitzen. Katie insisted on Rudolph too.
They lifted their heads as if on cue. They looked left, they looked right. Should they take flight?
As the wind started stirring, the deer sniffed the air. Suddenly the deer they all stopped and stared.
From out of the woods stepped a very large buck. The horses, the doe, the buck, what a sight. We could hardly believe our stroke of good luck.
The horses were nervous about sharing their field. The deer were anxious to see what it might yield.
They mingled together, keeping each other in sight, as they reached in the hay round to grab a quick bite.
They stood together and ate their fill. A gesture of faith, trust and good will.
As we stood in the dark observing this sight, I began to think what a beautiful night. All was calm and all was bright. A true delight on this special night.
All too soon the moment was lost. Tails began swishing and heads were tossed. Suddenly the deer disappeared in the night.
Before we left, I turned and looked, what a magnificent sight! On this beautiful night. The deer were all standing on the edge of the field. Bathed in the light of the full moon bright.
A special night! Oh, beautiful night! Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight!
