Home health and in-home care are often mistaken for one another, but they serve different purposes. Home health delivers medical care at home under a doctor’s order, while in-home care provides nonmedical support with daily tasks to promote independence. Knowing the difference helps you choose the right care for your needs.

Malik, a caregiver from Right at Home Northern Lake County, has shown great commitment to improving the quality of life of Shane, a client living with frontal temporal dementia. After Shane’s wife passed suddenly in December 2023, his sister Tracy and aunt assumed responsibility for his care and partnered with Right at Home until Shane could relocate to Minnesota. From the very beginning, Malik distinguished himself by establishing a consistent daily routine for Shane, a task that had proven challenging for other caregivers due to the severity of his condition. Malik’s ability to bring structure and stability provided Shane with comfort during a time of profound change.

Malik’s dedication went far beyond routine care. He organized and personally completed the office’s first-ever client road trip, driving Shane to Minnesota to visit Tracy. The journey was a success and included a special visit to the Mall of America, where Shane—an avid walker averaging 12,000 steps a day—was able to enjoy an activity he loves. While Shane may not remember the experience, it created cherished memories for Tracy and for Malik himself. Malik’s compassion, creativity, and unwavering commitment exemplify the Right at Home mission to improve the quality of life for those we serve. His efforts are a reminder that going the extra mile can make all the difference.

Many veterans need help at home as they get older. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers benefit programs that help cover the cost of this care. The challenge is knowing what’s available and how to get it.

Step one is getting enrolled in VA health care. From there, eligibility depends on your service record, any service-connected disabilities, income, and the level of help you need at home. Every program has its own rules, so knowing the basics can make the process smoother.

Caitlin, an 11-year-old, and Frank, a 91-year-old care home resident, formed an unlikely but heartwarming friendship through the “Adopt a Grandfriend” scheme at Steeton Court Nursing Home in Keighley, UK. Frank, originally from Liverpool and a former choir member, missed singing after his group disbanded. The program, launched by Spellman Care to combat isolation after Covid, pairs children with residents for activities like singing, crafts, and letter exchanges.

Over six months, Caitlin and Frank bonded over humor and shared experiences, with Caitlin finding inspiration in Frank’s life stories and Frank enjoying the connection with youth. The initiative benefits both generations by reducing loneliness, improving communication skills, and fostering confidence. As Frank says, “A smile can make your day.”

About the Owners:

Becky is originally from Albuquerque, NM. and her husband Mark is from the Midwest (Iowa). Both have business degrees and extensive training and personal experiences in the Health Care Industry. Mark actually went back to school and obtained his Certified Nurse Assistant certificate to get hands on experience. They opened their first Right at Home office in 2008 after Becky's father had a severe stroke. “We witnessed for ourselves how frustrating the Health Care System can be. It seemed like there was no one willing to help or provide answers to our questions. We felt like there was no place to turn.” At that time, Becky left her job and went home to help her mother for a month. Being in their 50's Becky and Mark have experienced many traumatic family situations, they are able to relate to most family crisis.
