3 things I wish more moms knew about motherhood:
1. It’s just a season. This too shall pass.
2. You can’t be good at everything. There will always be an area that feels like it’s lacking—and that’s okay.
3. You can’t do it all. You aren’t enough… and that’s actually the beauty of it.

I think we spend so much time trying to hold everything together, when maybe we were never meant to.

Molly took these cutie pictures of her books for next year and Ander’s I’m so blessed they both love learning. And reading. They’re both becoming AVID readers.

This was my first year homeschooling on my own, and boy did I have no idea what all went into this—even though I’ve been homeschooling for 5 years. Four of those were hybrid school, so I had support, schedules, and guidance. Going solo is a whole different ball game.

When it came to picking curriculum for next year, I asked myself a lot of questions:
1. Do I care if my kids are on grade level, or is it okay if they go at their own pace?
2. Do I want a gentler approach, or something more structured?
3. Am I going to teach the lessons, or do I want them to work more independently?
4. Do I enjoy this subject enough to teach it?
5. Do I want ā€œopen-and-go,ā€ or do I want to piece things together myself?
6. Can we do subjects together across ages? Some programs make this easy with different workbooks for different levels.
7. Charlotte Mason vs. traditional—what are my goals, and what does ā€œkeeping upā€ really mean for us?
8. Spiral vs. mastery—do I want kids to revisit concepts, or master one thing before moving on?

Math for Ander? Done. Molly needs something slower and more mastery-based, so we’re looking at Apologia to help her really get the concepts without rushing.

Reading will mostly stay the same. We all love the stories, and the kids beg for more chapters. Most of Molly’s readers have been great, and Ander read a children’s Bible cover to cover in his.

Language arts is getting a reset. I want more independent work and more writing without burning myself out. The Good and the Beautiful feels like the right backbone.

Science will be simpler but still meaningful. We’ll finish paleontology this year and read through the Sassafras Science Adventures, then move to a plan that’s manageable and engaging next year.

Bible and history are my favorites to teach. I’m debating two histories—Sonlight and The Good and the Beautiful Year 1. It might be a lot, but I love how both show the Bible’s timeline. Budget-wise, we’ll see!

Any suggestions?

love homeschooling. Most of the time. And right now we’re in a really good rhythm, which makes looking ahead to next year feel doable.

Homeschooling has taught me so much about my kids. How they learn. Where they struggle. What they enjoy. I love getting to tailor things to them instead of forcing a one-size-fits-all approach. I’m learning how to make them more independent learners while still walking side by side.

Math looks different for each kid. Ander is thriving in level 2 and will continue there next year. Molly is doing okay, but it’s a struggle. The pace is too fast and too spiral for her. She needs something more mastery-based and slower, so we’ll be changing that.

Reading has been a huge win. Both kids are reading at or above grade level, and we absolutely love the book lists from Sonlight. I’ll keep reading aloud from those lists, and they’ll continue reading through them on their own.

Language arts wasn’t a great fit. It was too parent-led and hard to sustain. Next year I’m planning something more workbook-based and independent.

Science is the one I’m being most honest about—we barely did it. I was overwhelmed. Next year I’m choosing something simpler and more engaging so it actually happens. We’ll finish paleontology this year and read through the Sassafras Science Adventures, then switch to something low-key but comprehensive.

Bible and history have been highlights. Both have been rich and meaningful, and I genuinely enjoy teaching them. We’ll mostly keep those the same, with a few small additions.

Are you starting to look at next year yet? Making any changes?
