Could you be doing everything right and still be experiencing pain? Absolutely! If you’ve ensured that the position and latch are good, your baby is gaining weight well, and you’re still in pain, what do you do?
First, try not to stress (I know, easier said 😵💫). Is the pain right when baby latches? Is it a sharp, “oh my god,” toe-curling pain? Do you realize you haven’t exhaled for three seconds? Then suddenly, everything relaxes, baby gets into a rhythm, and it’s all fine…. That’s completely normal, and will get better!
Your tissue is getting used to the newness of it. Your ni***es can be sore from the constant contact, and/or baby can have an overly vigorous suck.
For most moms, the initial latch pain resolves after about 2 weeks. If baby has a particularly strong suck, it may take up to 4-6 weeks to resolve. Try lanolin ointment, letting breast milk air dry on the ni***es, or cooling gel pads to soothe.
However - if you’re experiencing persistent pain that doesn’t subside 10-15 seconds once baby is latched, or if your baby is over 2-3 weeks old and there’s no improvement, that’s the time we need to see what the underlying issue is. Even if there’s no pain, if your baby isn’t gaining weight or starts losing weight, it’s imperative to get medical attention.
