Because I am largely retired from my practice it has been a long while since I posted .When this article came to my attention I thought it merited my sharing. While I have never observed the level of callousness cited by some women in this article I have heard many stories of women who were traumatized by unexpected events during birth that were not adequately explained or consented to. Less attention has been paid to the emotional well-being of women giving birth than there should have been. How many of us have heard, "a healthy mom and baby is all that matters" from care-providers and family members? I can attest that it is NOT all that matters. Sometimes we all need to remember that emotional health is critical to a new mothers ability to function in the raw time that follows birth. My wish is for all laboring women to be emotionally supported by a loved one and caring professional birth attendants.

Women are speaking up and raising awareness about obstetric violence, including surgeries, medications, and procedures they didn't consent to.
