Introducing Mark DeVries, as a recent addition to the Mend Counseling team. Mark brings decades of experience to our group, and specializes in caregiver support, grief and loss, aging, retirement, relational issues, depression, anxiety, and more.

Mark's clients often arrive at therapy at a turning point. Many are soulful people sitting with long-held questions about identity, regret, and meaning. They are ready to look honestly at their lives but haven't had the space to do so. With Mark, that space exists. He holds steady while clients slow down, take honest stock, and find unexpected clarity. Over time, they release what no longer fits and settle more fully into who they actually are.

I realize some of you don't know me, so hi. I'm Peter Cappon.

I started Mend Counseling out of a belief that people don't heal in isolation. We heal in relationship.

I do my best work with people carrying depression, especially men who haven't felt like they had a place to bring it.

I genuinely look forward to Mondays. I get to have real conversations with people doing hard things, and it fills me up. My clients and colleagues inspire me to keep learning and growing every day. I feel lucky to have found work that keeps surprising me.

Beyond my own caseload, our team at Mend has openings in some high demand areas including couples therapy, neurodivergence, and substance use. If you or someone you know has been looking for the right fit, we'd love to connect.

If you're looking for a therapist, I'm currently accepting new clients: www.mendcounselingmi.com/schedule-a-session

Introducing one of the newest members of our team, Keith Foisy.

Keith’s clients often feel like they have lost their true north amidst life’s shifting seasons or unexpected turns. They are tired of just getting by; and are ready to reconnect with a deeper sense of direction. Keith provides a space to explore these changes with curiosity rather than fear. He helps individuals clear away the noise and align their daily lives with their true values, moving from uncertainty to authentic purpose.

Hey everyone, introducing Jessica Cuellar. She is a recent addition to our team and is working online exclusively. Her specialties include but are not limited to:

-Chronic illness
-PTSD
-Religious trauma

Jessica often works with clients who feel guarded, closed off, or unsure whether people can be trusted at all. She approaches therapy with transparency, openness, and respect for client autonomy, focusing on the work clients want to do rather than imposing an agenda. As trust develops, clients often regain confidence, organize their lives, and begin to reengage with the world around them. Jessica’s goal is not to create strength, but to help clients reconnect with the strength they already possess.

Welcome to Mend Counseling, Jamee Kraai Bragg!

Jamee’s clients show up ready to be real, even when it’s uncomfortable. With warmth, humor, and honesty, she helps them loosen impossible standards and let go of who they think they should be. In sessions with Jamee, people laugh, cry, and experience everything in between. That’s the kind of life they’re learning to live. They speak their truth, feel their feelings, and grow more comfortable in their own skin. Often, they look back with pride at how grounded they’ve become.

Projection is something we all do.
It’s not a flaw. It’s a protective move our minds make when something inside us feels too much.

But over time, those projections shape how we see the world. They also shape how we treat ourselves.

Therapy can help you notice what you’ve pushed away, understand why it mattered, and gently bring it back into view with compassion.

Ready when you are.

We all carry parts of ourselves that feel too complicated, too intense, or too unacceptable to share. But healing happens when those parts are met with care, recognition, and deeper understanding. At Mend Counseling, we create space for your whole self — even the parts you’ve learned to silence. You don’t have to hold it all alone.

Introducing our newest therapist, Sara Hoekstra. Welcome Sara!

Clients come to Sara when they’re tired of holding it all together. They find new strength by becoming solid in who they are. Sara creates a safe, calm space where they explore all parts of themselves — even those they’ve feared. With her honesty and warmth, they learn to honor pain, soothe inner turmoil, and release control. They work through betrayal, heal old wounds, and discover a grounded strength they didn’t know they had.

It’s easy to think you did something wrong when your life feels imbalanced.

But balance was never about staying still.

It’s about adapting and shifting with the moment you’re in.

You’re not doing it wrong.
You’re just human.
And balance shifts with life.

Whether we're feeling well or struggling, beating ourselves up doesn’t help. When we're unwell, reaching out can make a difference. And when we’re doing well, life has too many challenges to waste the opportunity—we can use that time to connect, grow, and build the meaning and stability that will support us and our communities down the road.

Our beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world shape our mental health in profound ways. Religion and spirituality play a significant role in shaping these beliefs—for better or for worse.

Many people find deep meaning and direction in their lives through spiritual and religious practices. But when religion or spirituality lead to shame, fear, or a loss of self, it can take a toll on mental health. Healing is possible. Exploring your beliefs—whether that means questioning, redefining, or letting go—can be a powerful step toward greater freedom, authenticity, and well-being.
