If you saw my stories yesterday you know that I start my CFY pretty soon here, which is both awesome and anxiety inducing at the same time. By the time I start I will have had about 2 weeks off. During this time I’ve felt so much pressure from myself, social media etc. to be productive. That somehow the more productive I am, the more I am worth as a human. ⁣
Friend I am here to tell you that is just not true. You need time to rest, to recharge, to literally do nothing. We live in a society that encourages toxic productivity. 🥵
⁣✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
If you find yourself feeling unworthy because you haven’t been ‘productive enough’ please remember you are a human BEING. Your worth does not fluctuate based on your productivity levels ✨❤️

Happy weekend friends! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻⁣
Soooo I love this strategy for a few reasons. It is great because it helps to expand a child’s sentence length and promote a vocabulary rich in different types of words (i.e., nouns, verbs etc). 🏃‍♀️💃🏻💭😃
⁣⁣
Pro tip: Repeat the verb at the end of the sentence. “You are jumping!” Jump, jump, jump! Tip from .dee.slp ⁣ 🆙 🆙 🆙

Happy Sunday! ⁣
Let’s talk language strategies. A few posts ago I chatted about skills kiddos needed before first words emerge. ⁣
In this post I’m going to be sharing a few of my favorite language strategies to support language development. ⁣

Here they are:⁣
1. Self talk aka narrating what you are doing. This might feel ridiculous to do but I promise it will expose your kiddo to so much functional language! ⁣

“I am folding the blue shirt and stacking it on top of the red one.” 👕 👚 ⁣

“For lunch we will make sandwiches. First I will open the cabinet to get out the bread.” 🍞 🧀 ⁣

Why? ⁣
I love this strategy because it assigns meaning to language because you’re pairing words with the actions you’re performing. It also exposes your kiddo to SO MANY WORDS! (Seriously...research supports this)⁣

2. Stop asking questions and instead highlight verbs. ⁣

“Bird flying!” 🦅 ⁣
“Mom driving!” 👩🏼‍🦱⁣
“Dad cooking!” Dad👨🏽⁣
“Opa smiling!” 👨🏼‍🦳⁣

Why? ⁣

Every sentence contains a verb so this strategy encourages your child to combine words to form sentences. Also, verbs are more abstract as opposed to concrete because nouns are actual things (cups, computer, dog) whereas verbs are things we do (run, jump, think). If you try to picture the word cup it may be easier for you to visualize than the word holding. This means verbs can be a bit harder for kiddos to lean as opposed to nouns. So instead of asking questions use noun + verb sentences. See above for examples. ⁣

3. Wait for a second after a comment or question. ⁣

“A car driving! Vroom, vroom, vroom’” 🚘 ⁣
“Cleaning the pan. Swish, swoosh!” 🧼 ⁣
“Should we play at the park or in the backyard?” 🖼☔️⁣

Maybe the child will repeat the word and maybe they won’t. But children are often more likely to communicate with you if the situation is lower pressure (aka not asking them a question but instead making a comment or giving them language to use to answer a question you’ve asked by providing choices.)⁣

As adults and as a culture in general we like to quiz our children. We ask them questions and expect them to respond quickly. What we have to remember is that language is hard! Continued in comments...

Connection comes first.⁣ 🤞🤞🤞
Always. ⁣
Without connection you have a broken foundation. ⁣
Yesterday I was working with a student who is usually pretty cheerful. She entered the session a bit quieter than usual and seemed down but didn’t want to talk about it so I didn’t push it. In therapy we were focusing on interpreting sarcasm and we were working on the sentence “I LOVE Mondays” and my kiddo replied, “It must be just another manic Monday.” To which I replied, “I wish it was Sunday.” Then we both sang the next few lines together and listened to the song for a bit. ⁣
This student was belting out this song like there was no tomorrow. Afterwards we had a good laugh and continued the session. ⁣
But the mood was different. This student’s demeanor visibly improved after we had 3 minutes of connection. ⁣
Remember, rapport is the floor (foundation) for successful therapy ❤️❤️❤️

Have you ever wondered what a child needs to be able to do before they begin speaking? Look no further!⁣
Below are 11 prerequisite skills for beginning to speak:⁣⁣
👂👀👄🧠👄👀👂⁣⁣⁣
1. This means the child responds to people trying to play or talk to them.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
2. This means the child reacts to things they see, smell, taste or hear.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
3. This means the child shifts their attention from an object to another person so they both pay attention to the object.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
(e.g. Child looks at toy on table and then at mom because the child wants it) ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
4. This means the child focuses on one activity for at least 5 minutes.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
5. This means the child completes requests appropriately. (if child is struggling simplify the language- toys away) ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
6. This means the child plays with different toys and uses familiar objects in routine. (model for the child how to use objects in routines) ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
7. This means the child copies what they see and hear (this is how they learn to talk). ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
8. This means a child uses their voice to get attention (e.g. cries)⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
9. This means the child purposefully works to get your attention in order to get their needs met.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
10. This means the child communicates nonverbally (e.g. waves hi/bye, points).⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
11. This means the child has extended back and forth interactions with someone else.(this doesn’t have to be taking turns during speech, it can be rolling a toy back and forth) ⁣⁣⁣

✨Maslow before Bloom✨⁣
According to the theories of Maslow and Bloom, higher level cognitive skills (i.e. bloom’s taxonomy) are inevitably impacted when basic needs (i.e. maslow’s hierarchy of needs) are not met. ⁣
I originally created this post with children in mind. However, I think now more than ever it also applies to adults. ⁣
Many adults you know are struggling with basic needs due to the pandemic.⁣
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Applying this to our students, if a student is struggling to focus on academic content, maybe it’s time to step back and rebuild rapport, check it to see if they need to chat, or work on improving their confidence. All of these basic needs are prerequisites for academic success. ⁣
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
To me this means we should remember that almost everyone we know is likely fighting a battle we know nothing about so be kinder than necessary. Also check in on your friends and loved ones- they need you💕💕💕⁣

As you may know, I am in my last few months of my final placement in graduate school where I work with elementary and middle school aged students. I was talking with my supervisor last week after a group session and I pointed out a few things that I could have done better. She seemed surprised and told me that she actually thought those were good things I had done for C Y and Z reasons. So this is a friendly reminder to be kind to yourself, you are doing better than you think.
